Help! I'm trying to get a line on one of those shirts worn with a dinner jacket or mess dress which has the plain white front and cuffs but the rest of the material is totally outrageous (in a Hawaiin kind of way).

Anybody help??

Never heard of those!! They sound like fun ... have you tried calling those formal dress hire places? They may be able to help.

La Valiere does them, as does one's tailor, of course.

Ask on the military forum. The rebellious youth often like to wear them at dinner nights to fool the grown ups into thinking they are correctly dressed ;)

Yep - you'd have to be a little bit english eccentric to go for these - the websites ARE at the other side of the globe for you though..

If all else fails you might even find one on eBay.

Interesting, very interesting.
Slight drift but this thread has reminded me I am after a fairly spectacular (& loud) shirt for ones "stage persona".
Unfortunately because of lighting used white is not an option. Any suggestions of places to browse for a couple of hours on a Sunday in Londinium gratefully recieved:)

Allan 908:

If you are ever in London, there`s a shirtmaker on Jermyn Street, W.1., just behind Piccadilly, who has been making shirts to order for years.
You choose the material and they will tailor a shirt for you.

hmmmm...........

probably your best bet would be to brave the morass that is Oxford Street and Regent's Street.....

Try and go for some of the bigger department stores such as Liberty's, Selfridges, Debenhams, as well as the high street shops such as Top Shop, New Look, and Hennes if you ARE going to go for a style bypass....

Another good area for 'funky' clothes is in Soho and Carnaby Street which is effectively just behind Liberty's.

Bear in mind that few of these shops open before 10am...

have a look at this site for specific shops - you can 'virtually' walk the streets before you go there in real life so that you can find specific shops more quickly, and also to goo goo respective names so that you can get an idea of their stock.

Thanks guys (and gals). The shirt isn't for me it's for a mate in the States and we talked about them at my wedding in Vegas in Oct. I promised him I'd hunt one down but Goo Goo didn't seem to want to play when I tried it. Extensive hunting in this neck of the woods also turned up a blank.

My days of wearing dj or mess dress are long gone - down here it's classed as formal dress if you are wearing thongs (flip flops for the Brits)! :E

Pineridge is right about Jermyn Street in London. It's the shirt equivalent of Savile Row for suits. ie Superb quality, but you pay for it.
There are several well-established good quality shirtmakers there (and a few others who trade on the 'Jermyn Street' address), and they will make shirts to order - but it's not cheap, and there's usually a minimum order of 3 shirts, although they dont have to be the same.
eg Turnbull & Asser charge from £130 for a ready-to-wear classic white dress shirt (marcella or pleats). Made-to-measure (basic measurements only) costs more, and full bespoke more again. Hilditch & Key are cheaper than T&A, but still not cheap.
Either way, a lot of money for something where the novelty will inevitably wear off.

Good thing you explained what you meant by wearing thongs, Allan908.
Brit readers might have formed a certain view of you if you hadn't. :)

Any tailor should be able to do one up for you.

Called 'party shirts' in the USAF, I've had several made as that trim guy of youth turned into the paunch of middle-age.

Take a tux shirt into said tailor along with the cloth you want for the back/sleeves, explain repeatedly what you want, then, presto! you have your shirt.

Really, FL !

The defendant was found guilty of 'being in possession of an offensive shirt'.

There was a forum on this a while back, but I cannot find it. Anyone know of a shop/tailors that does them?

Nope but Mrs S&S does a great job of making mine from a normal shirt and my choice of cartoon duvet material :)

PM if you want to know more!

There is a RN shop on Portsmouths Sea Front nr Unicorn Gate... to the RHS of Louis Bernard/Jack Blair Mens Wear that does great 'Fancy Back' shirts. You just pop in, pick the craziest fabric known to man and there is a great lady that puts the whole thing together for you.

Some of the Pompey based boys might be able to give you the name/tel no of the shop.

Not sure where you are based but suspect it might be a bit out of the way?

The talk of Jermyn Street and Saville Row got me wondering, as I am based in the sarf at the moment, I thought I would have a quick look here (http://www.gievesandhawkesmilitary.com/acatalog/RAF_Uniform.html):eek::eek: How much? Particularly as they have confused the titles slightly!!

But then when I had a quick look here (http://www.gievesandhawkesmilitary.com/acatalog/Swords.html) and thought that seemed like a remarkably good deal!!

You should all have your velcro ripped off at dawn and to stand naked for the SWO. Suitably dressed!

Had mine made by a tailor in Bishop Street in Belize many years ago, probably when I was more responsible....he said they would be ready on Friday, but when I turned up on the next Friday the shirts were not ready, he did say in his defence that he did not say which Friday ! Eventually collected and duly worn to dinners etc, oh for youth again.
