AAC TA Rearcrew?

This may be a grey area, but does anyone know if AAC TA groundcrew (i.e. 6 and 7 Regiment, Army Air Corps) are eligible for Rearcrew training and duties (doorgunner/observer/winch operator) upon promotion, just like their Regular counterparts?

I understand 7 Regt fly Gazelle, but whether their groundcrew or those of 6 Regt qualify for Rearcrew in the Lynx I don't know.

christopher Robin - couldn't be more wrong I'm afraid!! OOps. I directed the query to the Avaition forum on ARRSE was so that they stod the best chance of picking up an answer from someone currently doing the job :) Don't know many rearcrew from the AAC who use this site.
As usual somone on this site hi-jacks a decent response to a query and leaps on errors of spelling and grammar as if it were a crime akin to treason or shoots someone down in flames bcause they may direct them to a forum elsewhere :*
Another reason I directed radarboy to ARRSE - less chance of encountering responses like yours and having a thread descend into crabs vs everybody else (ooh no-one likes us :{). At least you wouldn't get a limp-wristed response like taxydual!

He can get the answer he wants right here. TA only fly gazelles therefore no rear crew. Ground crew is contracted out. 6 Regt are TA, but have no aircraft and will do groundcrew duties. 7 Regt will be folded on 31 March next year due to people in london thinking it will be cheaper for Apache crews to do their ABFAC training in Apaches rather than gazelles.

My earlier point referred to the fact that if he is in the TA, he might be able to transfer across to the regulars as rear crew on a long-term engagement - although it is theoretically possible, in the way that travelling at half-light speed is theoretically possible, I doubt that it will happen in my lifetime.

I don't think so, as there are a lot of other units up there from other corps, but it doesn't look good. Estimates is that closing 7 Regt will save £1m per year, which isn't much in the big scheme of things. Meaniwhile there is no one placed to do the tasking that they used to before, so the UK will have to sustain a capability gap - for Homeland disaster relief and security as much as getting people from A to B and ABFACing.

Talk to someone at Wallop, or speak to the guys at Gut or Dishcloth, they should be able to give you the gen. After hearing some hair raising stories from the front, you might be better staying where you are ;) The job (iirc) is now 'aviation rear crewmember' , no longer door Gunner or bag carrier, etc.
Oh, and you'd better start praying if you want to fly with the saviour (of (B)Army aviation) :ok:

Unless it has changed since I left, when I was asked to help design the replacement to the ADG course, the training takes 6 weeks and starts with an aptitude and grading course similar to the pilots'. We didn't use TA soldiers then because of the pre-course requirements - Junior Leadership Cadre pass, Sigs Class 1 and so on - and the length of the course itself would pose a problem. On completion should there be a way through there would be issues with currency and so on.

If this is what you want to do then get in touch with the potstings bods and persuade them to allow you to transfer to a FTRS or NRPS (I never know which it is) and find a sponsor in one of the German Squadrons. Bear in mind that the training costs the taxpayer around 100k so the argument must be compelling and return of service minima may be mandatory...
