I draw your attention to the following RNTM:

"RNTM 112/08 CHANGE IN DRESS REGULATIONS FOR THE WEARING OF THE GILT SUBMARINER SPECIALISTION BADGE

Sponsor: Submarine Service Commander –
Purpose

1. This RNTM announces the change in dress regulations authorising the wearing of the gilt Submariner Specialisation Badge to be worn on No 3 uniform.

Entitlement

2. All RN qualified submariner personnel.

Description/wearing instructions

3. The Submariner Specialisation Badge consists of the QE II commissioning crown sited above two heraldic dolphins. The badge is of gilt and is to be worn as follows:

a. No 3A uniform. A miniature badge, as worn on Mess Jackets, may be worn, horizontally, in a central position on the tie. The miniature badge is paid for at own expense.

b. No 3B uniform. Fixed with a ‘pin and clutch’ attachment, horizontally, 38mm centrally above the left breast pocket.

4. The contents of this RNTM will be included within BR 81 at the next amendment. Current BR81 regulations for the wearing of the submarine gilt badge on No 1 and No2 uniforms remain extant."

Being on an establishment with a mixy-blob of specialisations, the submariners are now wandering around wearing their dolphins. Now, being a fully signed up member of all things equal, should the WAFUs be allowed to do the same?

Discuss......

Are aircrew entitled to wear submariners' dolphins at any time?:ok:

If you are aircrew who was in a previous life a submariner, then yes, you may now wear your dolphins with pride at any time :ok:

(i thought there might have been a polite gap before some smart a**e came up with that one... :hmm:)

Just to clarify for the pedants, then...

"Should aircrew be allowed to wear their badge of specialisation on their No3 uniform, ie pilot wings, observer wings, etc."

Greenhaven - genuine question, in that scenario which which order would they be worn ?Dophins over wings or vice versa.

well as it stands we can't yet do it anyway on No 3 uniform, but i have seen an ex SP 814 NAS who had both and indeed wore both on his tropical mess jacket in a fairly similar location on the lapel. Can't remember which way round he had it though.

Maybe they should be allowed to wear them on their pyjamas and dressing gowns, or perhaps the front of the Waitrose shopping trollies

ZH875 - i find the wings on my pyjamas snag on the duvet so only tend to wear them on my smoking jacket these days. No such problem with rank slides, got special silk ones made up by Gieves....

Anyway, real aircrew don't wear pyjamas! :ok:

Back in the 1920s submarine M2 operated a Parnall Peto 2 seat reconnaissance aircraft. Lts Byas and Keighley-Peach are on record as drawing both flying and submarine pay. Unfortunately, M2 was lost off Weymouth when the hangar flooded.

Photographs at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parnall_Peto

No record of whether or how the 2 Lts wore their badges.

Do WAFUs really need to explain that they are aircrew? It's usually obvious:ooh:

Where would you put them though? Surely a bit difficult with a short sleeved shirt?

On the basis that real dolphins can't fly I would say Wings go over Dolphins. :E

Hardly Worth it

Fell right into that one. Anyway most FAA are RAF rejects so you are quite correct in when you are talking about real Aircrew.
