"RAF helicopter pilot Flt Lt Michelle Goodman, 31, became the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross.

She flew her Merlin helicopter under fire from mortars and rocket-propelled grenades to pick up seriously injured serviceman Rifleman Stephen Vause in the southern Iraqi city of Basra last year.

Flt Lt Goodman said: "It's one of those things that you look at afterwards and go 'wow', but at the time it was just a case of getting on with the job."

Thank you for that. I rarely go into the military forum, hence missing the original announcement. I am delighted that her achievement has been acknowledged, along with all the others who are equally deserving of their awards.
