Super Puma fleet grounded after crash - By Teh Joo Lin

A Repbublic of Singapore Air Force helicopter crash-landed seconds after taking off yesterday afternoon, the Defence Ministry (Mindef) said in a statement.

Two pilots and an aircrew specialist on board the Super Puma emerged unhurt from the crash, which happened at Sembawang Air Base near Yishun at about 3pm.

In response to queries, Mindef spokesman Colonel Darius Lim said the Super Puma had been departing on a routine training mission.

It was hovering just above the ground when it came crashing down. The three airmen were able to walk away.

The entire Super Puma fleet has been temporarily grounded while Mindef investigates the mishap.

This is the first incident involving the twin-engine Super Pumas in five years, Col Lim said.

In July 2003, a Super Puma crash-landed during a training mission in Australia.

One crew member broke a leg and injured his back, while three others escaped unhurt. The crash was blamed on an engine fire.

The Super Pumas entered service in 1985.
