View Full Version : Spitfire over Surrey!

I was enjoying a nice walk in the surrey countryside today (5th May) north of Guildford, sunny, warm, good company, lovely views........and then the unmistakeable sound of a merlin was heard from above! And sure enough there was a lovely lone spitfire heading in a southwest-ish direction 1500ft up. Marvellous :D:D:D

My companions asked where it was going and i answered 'some airshow no doubt'. About an hour later it came back on a northeast heading. Anyone know where it was heading to ? Also for my curiosity, where is it based ? North Weald would have been my guess.

Thanks

I do not think it is from NW more likely Dux.

I would suggest that it probably was the Kent Spit, based at Biggin Hill. It took off some time around mid afternoon on Monday so quite possibly that one.

There was an airshow on at Old Warden over the weekend. There own spitfire is in the middle of a complete overhaul so could have had something to do with that possibly

I don't think it came from Duxford (I was there yesterday). A 2-seater spitfire left Duxford ~11:45 yesterday am, but was back before 13:30.

The only other departure of note was a ME109 about 14:30, it hadn't returned when I left @ 17:30.

Don't know if they're connected but 2 formations of Chipmunks (3 + 2) and then a bit later a Spitfire called Southend Radar - all from Calais, heading for Denham.

All went up the Thames Estuary, so I didn't catch sight of any!

I saw what looked like an Extra & Cessna flying in formation a few days ago.....

But also, on the same day i saw two WWII fighters (couldn't tell what type they were)

==========

All went up the Thames Estuary you say, they may be practicing for the Southend Airshow perhaps but surely not already?

Unless, they are practicing now so that if any faults/tech problems occur the a/c can be repaired in time

Again, i don't know if my sightings are connected with what's going on!

Achtung schweinhund! :p Me109s, Cessnas, formation flying, sounds almost like a mini-invasion going on here. And all i wanted to know about was a single spitfire somewhere near Guilford and i'm none the wiser. I have better things to do at the moment, but i'm a curious soul and i need to know! Would this question be better placed in the 'history and nostalgia' forum ?

Come on put me out of my misery someone :}

I wouldn't imagine anyone would start their practice for the Southend air show from Calais. I wondered if they had been to a show over there and were returning home.

Even without the Spitfire, five Chippys in one day is almost unheard of.

There's a show on at Duxford this coming weekend - something to do with that?

There was one flying out of Booker a few months back, the recently restored AR213. Could it have been that one?

There was an event called Henham Wings and Wheels going on. I don't know where it is in relation to you but here are a few links:
