Looks like the Sukhoi designers had too much vodka and put the wings on the wrong way.

Doesn't it look like the aircraft that Clint Eastwood stole in Firefox ?

Seriously whats the general opinion of the cognesci out there as to the likely advantages (or not) of this new Russian toy.

Didn't NASA have some forward swept technology demonstrator? I think the sweep made it mind bendingly unstable therefore a nasty piece of work to meet close up.

Forward swept wings are great for agility, but because they are aerodynamically divergent they present serious structural problems. Essentially as AoA increases the wings bend upwards which, unlike a conventional design, increases the AoA further which bends the wings up more until they snap off or the AoA decreases by some other means.

Ah, I thought this rang a bell. Built by Grumman for DARPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_X-29)

The Su-47 Firkin is not a new design. Built as a technology demonstrator Sukhoi keep it active as a research aircraft. Google 'FSW - Forward Swept Wing' for its use in aviation history.

The next generation Russian fighter aircraft will be the PAK-FA.
