I'm hoping to be in San Diego for 1-2 weeks next month and wondered whether anyone knew of any "special" aircraft that might be available to fly there or nearby.

By "special", I'm thinking of a Cirrus, Columbia, Bonanza, DA42 or possibly even an old warbird. Something with a full glass cockpit could also be interesting.

I've got all of the relevant FAA licences and ratings (they're all current) but I'm not necessarily looking to go solo - just after a few hours dual in something "special".

Try the Extra 300 at Sunrise, its about an hour north but worth the drive.

For glass cockpit aircraft (C172, C182, SR22, and DA42), try Plus One flyers at Montgomery Field (KMYF):

There are some good day trips to be had - I can recommend Santa Barbara (KSBA) which is about 170nm away, and the flight takes you along the (very scenic) coastline the whole way. If you're IFR you'll probably get cleared directly over the top of KLAX.

I can also recommend gliding at Warner Springs (CL35), which is about 80 minutes drive to the north-east:
