Mil to Civi infomation

Hi there, i was hoping you might be able to answer a few burning questions about moving to the airlines from current Mil training,

The person has,

1 - Completed EFT on the Tutor, BFJT on the Tucano and AFT on the Hawk, they are awaiting their OCU slot to start. Total Mil flying time around 400 hours.

2 - Have a JAR-PPL SEP/TMG

3 - Holds a Class 1 medical.


The questions,

1 - What options do they have to leave the Mil now and go to for airline training, would any airline actually care about their previous flying? Or would they be no better placed than a complete novice?

2- Are any bridging packages open to them?

3 - Anyone got any thoughts on this rather odd situation?

Have you got a "quote" for the amount you'd have to pay to leave - it won't be cheap.

The airlines won't be remotely interested in your hours, and there's no bridging available, AFAIK, so you'll have to start from scratch. £75,000 and counting is the cost of a fATPL in civvy strasse :ok:

To answer your Q's:
1. Lots of options, all costly, and in my opinion, all unattractive.
2. No bridging package available.
3. Why does he (or she) want to leave? He has obviously done quite well up to now, but has no real experience of military life/operational flying upon which to base a decision. The grass is not always greener, even in the light of a longish and frustrating hold. He will be viewed by the airlines as a beginner, but will already have his wings - no mean feat. I would suggest he sticks it out - he will certainly enjoy the flying more than the airlines. Most airline pilots will tell you that there is very little 'real' flying - and there is always the opportunity to become a civvie pilot later.

The other thing to note is, you're now too high houred to apply for any of the sponsorship packages awarded by flybe etc, as all of them require sub 100 hours iirc.

Basically, it's a self funded, from scratch ATPL. Not impossible. But it takes a while and it's far from cheap!

I agree with others above. The front-line is worth the wait!! Just be careful as you will have to sign a return of service once completing your OCU. I know of 2 friends that quit pre-OCU. Both started flying (self funded ATPL) neither of them made it as pilots as they gave up after spending/running out of lots and lots and LOTS of cash!!! Also know of at least 1 chap who quit post OCU who was made to fly a desk whilst he served his remaining 4 years return of service!!!!

I'd stick with it if I was you. If not, I've heard they are looking for guys to be BALO's!!!!!!!!!!!!:{

I would suggest any company would look askance at this scenario, from the point of view of loyalty and/or skeletons in cupboard issues.

This is not an odd situation at the moment in the military. Make sure you think long and hard before you decide what to do. You are not the first and wont be the last to be looking elsewhere from that stage of training. PM me for more info. I think you may get abit of flack for posting on here but dont let that cloud your judgement. I wish you all the best no matter what route you take.
You will have to do all the exams, Cpl Ir and MCC which is why it will cost you around 30k to get it all done. You should find the flying quite easy compared to your military flying but the revision for the exams will take alot of effort.
Should take you a year to do all those if you can afford to do it back to back. There are flying jobs out of the military for you but you will have to justify why you left to any interview board before they would take you on.
