View Full Version : AVGAS-where is the cheapest????

Ken Wells
16th Apr 2008, 12:57
[/B]just received an email re rise in AVGAS again at my local club.

As from Monday April 21st the price of AVGAS will be #1.52 inc Vat and Jet will be #0.83 inc Vat.

Where is the cheapest AVGAS in the UK???????

After all there are only 3 AVGAS Lorries that deliver the same fuel for SHELL, so it would be interseting to see what the variation is.

Cheers:ok:

AVGAS is £1.48 inc VAT at Gloucester, Jet A1 is £0.70.

Just been told that Compton Abbas, who did claim to be the cheapest, have put the price up from £1.28 to £1.36 (£1.31 for residents).

This question comes up regularly on this forum. Perhaps the moderators would consider a sticky with a link to this page (if that's permitted). If everyone makes the effort to update it for their local airport (it only takes a few seconds) we all benefit.

Who's really bothered where its cheapest? If its cheapest at Wick, are you gonna fly up there to save £5.00 on a fill up?

Ken,

£1.52 is a ridiculous amount of money for AvGas, however what more would you expect from WLAC!!!!??:bored:

They can, so they will.....................

At Eddsfield today... £1.25 inc VAT. Surely that's the cheapest in the country?

Great idea, one could even plan their weekend trips around the price guide!!

You Brits Love paying so much for your GAS!

Isn't it about time you changed your Non-elected Prime Minister, you know the one that told the UN today that democracy was important with reference to the other non-elected leader Uncle Bob.

According to The Times on line he is already lining up another non-elected person to take over called BALLS. Make's sense!

Cheapest is to order direct from the refinery, but you'll need approved storage for at least 3000 litres to make it worthwhile.

Wick actually is quite expensive, so I wouldn't bother with them unless you happen to be passing by!

Not too far to the Channel Islands, but even there nudging towards £1/litre.

Other option is to get approved for Mogas if you have low compression, a suitable fuel system and can get some without bio-ethanol contamination.

If you don't already, then setting the mixture properly can save you 10% or more.

What about Popham, Thuxton, Denham, IOW, Redhill, Headcorn, Booker; etc etc

niknak
18th Apr 2008, 20:12
Mark 1, you still need to get the stuff from the refinery to the facility and that involves using an appropriately licensed supplier, you may get a small discount for a bulk order (3000 litres or more as you say), but other than that, you'd still pay the market rate.

As has been said, unless you happen to need to go to a cheaper airfield or have one within the immediate vicinity, you're stuffed.

Dont kid your self. The price differential between AVGAS and MOGAS is much smaller in the UK than in the US.

The real problem with AVGAS is the relatively small volumes consumed/manufactured. Last I heard was that the annual UK consumption of AVGAS was equivilent to ones days London rush hour consumption.
So considering the premium its not that bad.
What will go down is the tax.

EGLD is 1.47 incl.

Mr Darling is laughing his bollox off! All that extra money from the VAT on the rising prices means he can afford to delay the 2p Duty increase. How clever and kind is he......not!

We need to do something, this is bloody 'culous.

Or does that only work when the fuel is distributed to the same location? If we all part owned x company and all bought fuel through x company could we get a better rate because of the volume the company buys or would that only work if it was all delivered to the same place? Just a thought?

Actually Rob I am on the commitee which is why I originaly asked the question re, prices across the UK.:(

WLAC now have a new Airfield General Manager with a strong aviation background and has an aircraft and flies himself, unlike the previous Manager, that didn't know her Elevator from her Ailelron (HARSH BUT TRUE):ooh:

One cannot discuss the current pricing, without knowing what the competition is selling AVGAS for. So I would be obliged if PPruners could just answer the damn question and stop wandering of the subject.:=

I just need a list of all AVGAS pricing accross the UK by airfield inc VAT,

If some places like Eddsfield can sell it for £125/ltr inc, and its not like they are getting through tons of the stuff for discount purposes, then either they are using it as a loss leader, or the other airfields are just making extra profit form us:= But i can't see what Edd would be using it as a "leader" to? As he runs a nice friendly quiet strip with nothing to sell you! Therefore i would suggest the other places are just making as much as they can from a virtually captive audience! The only problem, as has been said, flying from WWaltham to Edds for some gas would be un-economically viable, although a good reason for a flight north for a change to the L2K run! Still aslong as you can get it for £1.25 then its only a couple of pence more than the car stuff, so not too bad all things considered.

Vick Van Guard
20th Apr 2008, 10:53
It is still £1.10 / litre incl VAT at my club, £1.21 to non-members.

This will last until the next bulk delivery. The last time we filled the tank, in January (9000 litres), the cost to us was £1.08 / litre.

This gives you some indication of the profit some airfield operators are making. :=

Stampe
20th Apr 2008, 11:55
I think a lot of the smaller fields are just selling existing stock purchased at lower prices. They may get a very nasty shock when next filling their tanks. For the consumer that method of working is great but just imagine if the price ever starts to drop (ever hopeful) these places with slow turnover could be left with very expensive stock.

Vick Van Guard
20th Apr 2008, 12:32
Stampe
Of course we are selling our existing stock cheap, as we sell it at cost plus a couple of pence, and we fully expect the price to be much higher when we bulk up next.

I think the price of AVGAS did dip a little bit last year, but did anybody pass that on at the pumps? No I don't think so.

I was paying in the '1.40ish' range throughout last year at other fields, and yet at the begining of this year the wholesale price was only 1.08.

Is 30-40 pence profit / litre reasonable?

EGLL £1.230? My arse.

Saw the published figure on Pprune - so I popped over to fill up.

I've never met such a rude and un-cooperative radio operator in my life. He'd clearly never heard of an overhead join, and my request for the location of the signal square (he wouldn't tell me the circuit direction) was met with a fit of coughing...and then a thud.

Decided to land long on the grass runway at the end of the (very long) southern taxi way, since I could see some tyre tracks there - looks like a heavy twin gouged some turf up recently - but the markings for the grass runways are frankly rubbish.

Was impressed by the numerous static exhibits of contemporary airliner technology at the new aviation museum they've built at the western end of the airfield - apparently they try and fly some of the exhibits at weekends, helped by a bunch of willing amateur volunteers, but I reckon they need a few professionals in there to run the place to make a going concern of it.

Anyway, finally found the Avgas bowser - had to taxi round for ages - odd to have the "follow me" truck do the following instead of being in the lead, and it had blue lights as opposed to the usual orange. Turns out they only do Avgas for PPR 30 years in advance, and the £1.23 rate is only applicable if you uplift 3000 litres or more. Bloody typical. Anyway, I put Ken's name & address on the form the re-fueller (funny looking hi-viz jacket - it was black, made of kevlar, with lots of pockets) made me sign (and since when do fuel handlers need guns? - Health & Safety gone mad) since it was his thread on the Proon I was using as a reference for fuel availability.

Another fine mess he's got me into.

Can you fuel hedge avgas like Jet A-1? I know the buying is a lot lower than an airline but could you buy say 50000 litres and get a decent discount?

I think the important point with Avgas prices is they are very dynamic at present. On a list such as that above check the date of the price ,over2 months old is almost certainly invalid.Wholesale delivery prices are rising weekly if not daily.I ring ahead to establish fuel prices to deterrmine where I can fuel most cheaply ...a bit like the day job really.

It is still £1.10 / litre incl VAT at my club, £1.21 to non-members

Then would you care to tell is where that is - because it sure as hell isn't where your profile location is (£1.492 inc VAT)

That would explain the early morning raid at my house today, Loads of YMCA glad chaps in Black (it’s the new Black they tell me)

Handed me a bill for AVGAS, signed by some called Manuel from the Basque Arms Acquisition department; sometimes known as BAA.

Behind him was a Gnome, (well that's what it looked like in the early morning light); but then I recognised it as Willie Walsh who had popped along, to see if he could learn anything from a totally disorganised situation.

Eventually I explained that I did not own a Yak 52 and had sold my Pitts years ago, so the Pilot that bought the AVGAS was not me.

Willie offered me a free BA ticket, if I told them the name of the Pilot. He handed me a Business lounge pass with Naomi Campbell’s name scrubbed off and mine in it's place. When I looked closely, Naomi’s name had been written over SNOOP DOGGY DOO DOO's, so it was at least third hand!

I wiped the traces of Cocaine from the card on Willie’s arm and handed it back. "You can't buy me of that easily" I retorted. "Now if I could have a couple of hours in the 777 sim, that would be fun". I said withna smirk,
"see if I could land it at White Waltham without ripping the undercarriage off!!"

He whispered something to Manuel, who hit him over the head and in a flash they where gone. Along with the Graham Norton look-alike SWAT team.

Hey Ho just another crazy day in the wonderful world of Aviation!!!

Aircraft hangared at profile location, but not refuelled there if I can possibly avoid it.

Now a bit of a dilemma, my aircraft is a thirsty old hector, so if I broadcast where the cheap fuel is, it’s going to run out!

All I’ am prepared to say is we having a fly in on May 4th, and fuel will be available :ok:
