Just caught a news flash on Sky about a B1 exploding at Al Udeid - not much detail (as you'd expect!)

Hope the guys are ok.

Will post more when I see it.

Fingers crossed

BBC reporting that US Military at Al Udeid reporting the crew are safe after fire on landing.

Good news, just hope they haven't got it wrong....

Could be interesting with the B2 the other month as well....

Was camping in the desert a couple of miles from the base last night and heard/saw a series of large explosions which continued for at least an hour. I had to spend ages calming down my very nervous friend - it's probably just an exercise! Hope the lancer in question wasn't fully tooled up if you know what I mean:rolleyes: Could take a very specialist team to clear up!

Hi there! I'm a contractor working in the Al Udaid AB: the crew of B-1B that crashed yesterday evening is ok. The plane burned immediatly after the landing, while taxing to the heavy-ramp.

Thanks for that GML. Any news on why it burnt?! Seems odd to land and taxy back only to burst into flames! I've operated out of Al Udeid more times than I can remember and know the place well. Is it completely destroyed?
Cheers

Any news on why it burnt?! Seems odd to land and taxy back only to burst into flames! Not the first time, I just wonder if from the same fault. If so someone will be more than embarrassed...

........On September 15th 2005 B-1B 85-0066, which was deployed to Guam, was badly damaged by fire as it was landing at Andersen AFB. The fire apparently started in the aircraft's landing gear. Emergency crews quickly put out the flames and there were no injuries.....

The investigation into the incident concluded that leaking hydraulic fluid and sparks from a wheel being gouged caused a fire to start in the aircraft's right main landing gear as it touched down.

The incident was set in motion by the migration of the axle beam bushing and failure of the torque tube bushing, which over time allowed the brake to press into the wheel and gouge the rim. The movement of the brake also caused the pin connecting the brake to the brake swivel to break, resulting in a leak in the primary brake hydraulic system.

The resulting fire damaged the B-1's right wing, nacelle, structure and landing gear at an estimated repair cost of more than $32 million.

Yes, it's what people like you say when you haven't bothered reading the BBC, Sky News or Al Jazeera websites.

Not to mention the official US DOD statement.

Hi!

Still don't know anything about the origin of the fire! A friend of mine is a safety officer, but it has not told me anything yet about the fire! I'll let you know something as soon as I'll talk to him!

Please do. Make sure you inform an anonymous forum despite any official restrictions on the release of safety information and on-going investigations.

And while you're at it, perhaps you might stop by the base education center.
