Just heard this morning that it looks like the ATPL Courses at GCNS will no longer run with immediate effect!

Seems that the course has not been viable for a while now, but the were blissfully enrolling studes without making them aware of that fact.

Sympathies to current and proposed students. I would say that Bristol might do well out of this!!!

I hope not. It would be a blow to Scottish Training, especially Tayside with their new simulator.

What about the CAA exam centre? Will this still exist or must everyone up North go to London. Glasgow is brilliant for guaranteeing an exam place.

If this is true it is bad news. Did my exams and course with them back in 2003 and thoroughly enjoyed the course, the instructors were all very good and living in Glasgow for 7 months was great.

Sadly this is not a rumour. :sad:

A friend of mine due to start his course in May was served a letter yesterday from the Depute Principal of GCNS saying that his course had been cancelled and no further courses would be run.

It seems that the college were making a huge loss by running the courses despite the efforts of the Aviation Studies team. All the full time GCNS Aviation guys have been made redundant it seems. :(

I would suggest that anyone that had booked a course, but not yet received ther letter, gets in touch with them pretty quickly and get your deposit back while you still can!!!

Are you talking about the ATPL (A) course?? or maybe the ATPL (H) cours??


You said your friend was due to start in MAY. I was led to believe the ATPL(A) course started in APRIL, The ATPL(H) starts in MAY!

The (H) course runs alongside the fixed wing course. If theres any chopper guys then they basically just get taken aside by KM for the principles of flight subject. The rest of the atpl course is pretty much one in the same whether you are fixed wing or rotary.

Doesnt come as any great surprise that theyve called it a day.

Why did they fold, surely being the only ATPL groundschool in the area they would have had good numbers?

I think they ran 2 courses per year, with a max of 15 students per course.

Lets do the math, 30 students per year x £3,000 per course (approx)=£90,000

4 full time lecturers x £30,000pa salary (est) = £120,000

I think you have your answer.

Added to above figures is classroom costs, heating, lighting, course note printing, folders etc.

They also did distance learning but I don't think it was well subscribed.

As they were housed in an actual eductional institute I think they got grants from the EU per capita for each student. Even so I think it was difficult to make ends meet. Shame, as I got my ATPL's there with good marks and had a great time in Glasgow.

Not really suprised to see it go. I wouldn't have said it had the greatest of reputations unfortunately. Still, MT will always be the Gen Nav legend. My only worry is where GN will go in order to sniff his whiteboard markers? :E
