The caption under the photo in the article reads,

"Glamourized: The MoD have been accused of targeting yongsters by a teachers' union"

Maybe the teachers should have a look at that :ugh:

Ideally, the military should be allowed to promote itself, although it does have a certain unfair advantage in attracting recruits over maybe less glamorous trades. It is ridiculous to ban them and certainly not allowing students to see all the possibilities open to them.

At the same time, if teachers feel that strongly, as I am sure they do, they should do their utmost to tell the side of the story that the recruiter won't: case in point, Iraq - your government might well decide to hold a war, for utterly spurious reasons and you will be required to go (and have no choice in the matter). Perhaps a few less than jingoistic history lessons showing it isn't just the "bad guys" who start wars.

As I understand it, there are NO 'jingoistic' history lessons these days, and WE are always the "bad guys"!

Lack of Jingo these days is the norm, can't afford it! (once you've bought a few books, paid for endless photocopying and replaced a few batteries that's the annual department budget pretty well spent).

it depends (of course) where you are - up here in Scotland, 5 miles from the nearest base by the twisty route, and with a number of ex forces teachers on the staff, I doubt the overall attitude is anti-miltary. In fact a few of our pupils have been off with the Army this past week. They'd be off with the RAF and RN too if they offered a week away from lessons to the average 4th year, frankly. Getting them to stay in school, rather than fire an SA80 and eat compo whilst huddled in a ditch in the rain, is a non-starter.

Like the UCL rubbish, any sort of union short of the Mothers' Union (and they're probably militant these days) has its unfair share of lefty loonies - let's just hope the NUT see sense and vote accordingly. Bear in mind this thought - if there weren't conferences to stuff with the mass of unwashed, ill educated, rabid lefty tofu eating hemp underpants wearing (couldn't resist plagiarising that bit, it's brilliant) 'media studies' graduates then the beggars would be out mingling with the rest of decent society, and goodness knows what damage they'd do there.
