By 2011 we will be coping with The Shard - a 1000ft+ building on the south side of London Bridge. More than double the height of the Eye and nearly 200ft taller than Canary Wharf - and right on the heli route. Just about legal ??

Clever move - they have Transport for London as their anchor tenant.

Just as important, how will LCY traffic that goes to 1800ft as the MSA for runway 10 cope. We also use 1500ft at the moment for the SRVA in that segment of the zone for 10 approach when the ILS fails.

Looks like it is around 700ft from the river.

According to the website the building has full support from Mayor Ken.

"I BELIEVE A BUILDING OF THIS ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE WILL MAKE A BEAUTIFUL, EXCITING AND POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO THE CAPITAL'S SKYLINE."

No chance of a helipad on the roof of the lower floors then.....

Shot aerial background plates of the Shard and another impressive (proposed) tall building near the Gerkin, both will certainly add some pizzaz to the cityscape.

Don't worry,
With the credit crunch and Mayor Ken's likely imminent dethroning, The Shard may only reach the height of a great big white elephant...

Mind you I was looking forward to flying H4 with new scenery... plus there will be a new reason to take people up the Thames.... ka-ching.
