Huh, not that impressive. Did more or less the same thing on my first lesson, very shortly after the instructor said 'you have control'.

Well, I've been trying for 5 years and can't get beyond the hover without crashing! And that's with 10k hrs on the real thing (or perhaps that's the problem). Amazing how he manages to remain orientated with the beast - impressive.

That guy is Alan Sazbo. One of the best 5 in the world concerning R/C heli flying. It's not flying that's tricky, it's all about orientation in space. I had to overcome my problems, starting with hovering nose in, than left right positions. Getting to those manouvers takes years of practice and some 1000€ in damaged parts... :E

I've seen faster work :} That's normal speed. Seems unnatural, i know, but that's how it's done.

Few ever achieve this level of skill but a good formula to learn 3D is:
1 - Learn to fly the machine normally
2 - Practice
3 - Learn to fly basic 3D manoeveures
4 - Practice on the sim
5 - Practice on the sim some more
6 - Keep practising on the sim until you are confident to fly the model 3D
7 - Keep learning, keep practising
8 - Don't lose heart when you stuff £1000+ of your hard earned cash in to the ground (again) smashing it to pieces (and you will!):E

I am nowhere near to that type opf flying and frankly cant see the point, my flying is scale flying only. To date accross five machines (two bolkows and two raptors and a venture 30) I ahve completed over 800 flights without a crash. I know one could happen tomorrow, but if you do proceed slowly, it is possible to avoid a crash or at least stop it being a certainty.
