Seem to remember someone once posting some low level shots in this section for our aircrew, so here's some of mine:

Don't tell me they've found a way of getting a Viking through the Mach loop?

Nice one, Graeme. Like the Brimstone armed Harrier.

Thanks everyone for making me welcome - don't get down to the Mach Loop much, but we've got some mountains up this way, too! The Harrier, the Hawk and the King Air were over the Thirlmere Dam in the Lakes, whilst the Dominie and the Tornado were in the Selkirk to Moffat Valley. There's at least a dozen different hills along the latter to choose from for photos if anyone's interested. Paper Hill (just south of Loch of the Lowes, before the right-hand bend in the valley) has to be one of the best locations in the UK for low-level photography (outside the winter months, when the sun doesn't really get into it).

I'd love to hear how aircrew rate the Selkirk to Moffat Valley re low-level training, and whether they've ever noticed people taking photos of them there - the crews who use the Loop are obviously well aware that photographers are camped out on the Bwlch or Cad East/West going by the number of pictures I've seen showing x, y and z waving as they shoot past! ;)

The Viking was one of the Kirknewton ones (661 VGS) on summer camp at Portmoak last year. Don't think many people take low level shots of gliders, so quite pleased with the sequences I took on the couple of days I was up there. :)

Hi,

Would just like to endorse the compliments. Awesome images. Nice to see the shot of the glider too. Brings back fond memories of Catterick (summer)79 albeit in a ship that 'glided' like a piano out of a 4th floor window!

Thanks and best wishes,

Great technique and compostition/editing - particularly the Harrier.

Visiting me folks up in the Borders soon, might have to try it out.

Just one question on technique... Obviously you have to pan quickly for the Tornado etc, but does the Earths' natural rotation do the panning for you on photos of the Glider and King Air? :}

Maybe, but at least you don't have to zoom out to fit all of the pilot's head in the shot. :ok:

Graeme,
First of all nice pics mate. As an ex-member of 661 VGS it is brilliant to see ZE607 again. Even recognise the guys in it. Having spend hours and hours maintaining and flying that aircraft I feel honoured that someone such as yourself would be as enthused about avaition to take a picture of it. It's good to see that people don't just take pictures of fast and pointy things. Brings back a lot of happy memories!!
Thanks again mate

Dave,

Thanks for the kind comments - yes, I don't just take photos of pointy-nosed swingy-wingy things! Bishop Hill above Portmoak is an excellent location when 661 are on their annual summer camp. I like the idea of obtaining pseudo-over-water shots with Vikings! :) Some more happy memories for you, then (weather didn't always play ball, though - some dull shots):

Weather hardly ever plays ball when 661 is involved mate, the bad stuff follows us wherever we go! Portmoak and the surrounding area is an awesome place to fly, never got the chance to fly there myself, but did visit, have heard nothing but good reports from thise who have flown there!

Rated 5 stars for fun factor!!

Most self-respecting Tonka mates would consider it poor form to be up that neck of the woods and not transit the Moffat. Must confess not having seen too many photographers there....Too busy enjoying the view forwards and watching what the driver was doing!

Top piccies BTW!
