I incorrectly asked this question within another post in the tech thread.

They were talking about weight ditribution and people upgrading in-flight.

I was wondering- is it cheaper/more expensive/no different upgrading you seat class at the flight desk or on the flight.

I imagine it would still be cheaper to book the actual seat you wanted early rather then play the-- is there an upgrade available lottery.

The golden rule of getting the seat you want is to plan ahead. You can get a BA long haul club seat booked as a 42 day APEX for less the price of full fare economy.

Other than that build up your FF loyalty level and with airlines like SAS and BA they will frequently upgrade you. Else pay full fare on a very busy flight, hope your class if overbooked and the next one half empty and smile!:)

To your question Oneil, there is no single answer as countless factors come into play these days. Here are a handful;

How full is the flight
Standing instructions to ticket department on upgrades
Standing instructions to check desk to accept late upgrade bookings
Catering
Is the flight stopping en route to your destination and the biz seat is booked from that point.
