PILOTS WANTED FOR TOWING GLIDERS

We have a fleet of 4 Towplanes!
The Airfield is “Arthur East” in your Canada Flight Supplement. Just off Garafraxa Line 5, south of Highway 109, about 30 km west of Orangeville, or 8 km east of Arthur.
We fly from late April to December on weekends and 7 days-a-week May 24 to September or later.
Minimum Requirements:
* Private Pilot Licence * 100 hours Pilot in Command
* 10 hours on single engine tail wheel aircraft

NOTES FOR PROSPECTIVE TOW PILOTS
At York Soaring Association we operate a fleet of towplanes - One Supercub (PA-18), one Smith Cub, one PA-25 Pawnee, and one homebuilt. We operate from April to November weekends, and 7 days a week from June through to September, weather and field conditions permitting.
1. The minimum qualifications to fly YSA’s towplanes are:
- 100hrs Pilot-in-Command with a minimum of 10 hours tail-dragger time, (conversion and tail-dragger time not available at York) and a private pilot license minimum.
- Glider experience gained either in the form of a Glider Pilot License or by taking a minimum of 5 glider flights within the first 4 weeks joining York.
- Checkout on each type of tow aircraft to be used by the Chief Tow Pilot or his designate.
2. As a soaring club it is our preference that all members, including towpilots, be glider pilots as well. However, due to the amount of towing that we do it is difficult to recruit a sufficient number of towpilots from the ranks of glider pilots with power licenses and so there is a need to recruit power pilots as well. We hope that such pilots will eventually become glider pilots but there is no obligation to do so. And be assured, as a towpilot you are certainly not viewed as a second class citizen around York even if you don’t want to fly gliders.
3. York Soaring is a 100% volunteer organization - i.e. nobody gets paid for anything. It is a club where everyone is expected to volunteer their services for the benefit of the club in any way that they can contribute constructively. Our tow pilots do not get paid.
One thing that we cannot guarantee is the number of hours you will be able to fly. There are a number of reasons for this. But one thing is for sure, the more you are willing to fly and be at the field whether you are scheduled or not the more opportunities and flying hours you will get:
- Towing is shared amongst the pilots on the basis of their availability to be scheduled to fly a “time slot”
- Weather can stop flying and no towing is required during your time slot.
- We may limit the amount of time you fly on any one day to avoid potential problems due to fatigue.
- One or more towplanes may be out of service, either scheduled or unscheduled.
- Flying may start later than the schedule and stop later as well.
PROCEDURE IF YOU WANT TO JOIN US:
To join pay the annual fee ($495.00 in 2006 - reduced rates apply later in the year)
Obtain a check-out with a designated club check pilot. This will involve:
i. A few circuits to confirm your competency on a Supercub
ii. Study of the Tow Pilots Manual
iii. 5 rear seat rides to experience glider towing as an observer.
iv. 8-10 dual tows under supervision by a York check pilot
v. 5 glider flights if you are not experienced
You will be not be charged for anything unless you fail your initial competency check ride, in which case you will be charged at the rate of $125.00 / hour (2006 rate) for about 30 minutes of circuits and your membership fees will be returned unless you wish to fly gliders. You will also be charged as a regular member for the 5 glider flights if you need them. The cost will vary depending on the length of the flights but will be about $150 - $200.
vi. You will start towing gliders with the PA-18. After 10 hrs. you may be checked out for the Smith cub, and later for the others.
