Hi Chaps,

I'm sure I read somewhere that there are 2000 qualified helicopter pilots registered in the UK and 40,000 fixed wing pilots.

Does this sound about right and if so does anyone have the stats in black and white............or have I dreamt it?

I spoke to a CAA FCL chap in 1998 who told me then that there was only 800 CPL / ATPL Helicopter pilots within the UK, so i guess ten years later 2000 would be about right.

Intersting link that.

Bit suprised by the male/female ATPL(H) ratios. 16 women vs. 1331 men!

Why not ring the CAA and ask them. I did when I wanted to know how many helicopters were registered in the country and they were very obliging.

You can compare with Canada at Transport Canada. (http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/general/personnel/stats/stats007.htm)

Active in Canada:
PPL(H) - 542 3 with IR, 74 over age 65
CPL(H) - 2990 140 with IR, 84 over age 65
ATP(H) - 919 613 with IR (yeah I know, looks odd to Europeans), 14 over age 65

Oh yes, and 2339 helicopters registered in Canada as of Jan 2008

Is there anyway of finding out the exact number of current valid PPL(H) licences for 2008 instead of the total number of issued PPL(H) licences?

The reason I ask is that the total number of licences issued must be much greater than the number of current valid licences due to people allowing their PPL(H) to lapse and are no longer flying!

And does anyone know the percentage of PPL(H) that actually lapse and are not renewed once issued?

I'm surprised there are so many more ATPL(H) compared to CPL(H). These must include the old CAA licence (non IR required?)

It seems that there is a massive difference between PPL(H) licences issued and ones that are currently valid as a lot of people allow there licences to lapse.
