Here's a question for all you Ops and Despatch people out there...

How computer savvy are you?

By that I don't mean how many of you can use MS Office, run & file a FPL online, send an email or know how to reboot a PC.

I mean how many of us Ops Bods are actually able to create a web-page from scratch, set up an office network or even build your own PC?

Most Ops people I know are very intelligent people who often have quite "geeky" interests, eg plane spotting, train spotting, Flight Simulating, Stamp Collecting, etc. and often have encyclopedic knowledge on some very obscure things. By our very nature we would probably make great computer geeks!

I just wondered, in this interweb day and age, how many of us...especially those younger Ops Bods who've grown up with PCs in the home...would consider themselves IT literate or are even remotely interested in computers...

Yes, they can be used for other things, apart from surfing the web for porn on night-shifts!

I used to be Ops and have built my own PC, and a few others. I wouldn't do anything else as I am very picky on how I have my PC set up so a pre built one would annoy me!!

I built a basic webpage a year or so ago but did a more advanced one 6 years ago at University.

I havent bought a pre built PC for years. Probably around 7-8 years actually. Im also picky about what goes in mine. It all helps in this line of work as well. Never really did web design but have built PC's , networks etc many times. It all helps :ok: Your probably right about 5/10 ops people with interests such as these i find a lot of the people i work with have similar ones, from tech stuff to aviation to god knows what other obscurities :}

I'm a UNIX, Linux, Mac and MVS (mainframe) guy. I don't have Windows-based PC's in my house - only a Mac-based WLAN with a SUN Solaris server. (running on an old HP Windows PC).

I also can't stand ready-built PC's, but Macs, well, that's another story. Being UNIX based, and designed to POSIX standards, they're awesome.
