Poster 126.9 Started a thread entitled Jobs In Africa back in October 2002. The original thread can be found Here (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=121143)

The original post stated:
Somebody else started a similar thread here, which unfortunately is not getting a huge response. Due to it's heading I guess. May we start one where we as pilots and aviation employees can leave a contact email address for potential employers to find us? I'm in the fortunate position where I get to hire new guys/gals sometimes, and it is (believe it or not) hard to find them! I would leave my web site address here, but that would be exploiting the FREE advertising thingy.

If anyone is looking for a job, flying or in the industry; let us all know here and you never know your good luck! Hopefully some influential Africans look in here from time to time?

Please be advised of the following stipulations: The details you place should be done with caution. Please do not give out addresses, full names, or any information which may compromise your personal security. Please also be advised that email addresses are often farmed by organisations and individuals that may use them for behaviour less scrupulous than the author may wish.

This thread is for pilots interested in jobs in Africa, Not for individuals or companies looking to place unpaid advertisments. There is a link for companies and individuals seeking to advertise at the top of the page or Here (http://www.pprune.org/forums/advertise.php)

Hey guys.

I will be qualifying as a South African Commercial Pilot soon, but would like some advice on where and how to start my career?

A lot of people recommend to start as an instructor but I realy do not enjoy stalling and spinning enough to do that every day of my life for the next year!:yuk:

Any recommendations of companies in africa willing to hire newbies? I have a few extra bucks for a type rating or two, maybe a C208 or something..?

Thanx for the help.:)

Hey Guys
Fresh Comm Pilot looking for a job, preferably a Bush flying job.
Pls dont advice me to do Instructors, i dont see myself talented to do Instructors, its not easy to impart skills to wanna be pilots, although i know it s the easiest way to get the hours, but i think its unfair to the students. I know of many many frresh new comm pilots who become Instructors just to build hours and i have seen their Students suffer..!
To be an instructor, you need to have the talent to pass the information, one of the most difficult and most respectable in my eyes too...!
So guys if there a job for me pls let me knw ..
Many thanks

I mean to say my low time warrants a lower salary. If I had posted with higher times, I'd obviously be more recalcitrant in dealing with mgmt and salaries.

I just finished my 737 Type Rating.

You need a least 500h in type. Only type rating do you no good. There are many many pilots with many houres as PIC that are lookin in to Aisa and eles where for jobs. Good luck

I could not help noticing a post above in which someone claiming a total time of 3850 hours claims to have 1650 hours of instrument time.

As a rule of thumb instrument time is normally between 5% and 10% of total time, depending on where one is flying. Anything much above the 10% level would be most unusual and would require some explaining. Any resume with such numbers is likely to go straight in to the garbage can. What’s the point of posting figures such as those mentioned?

How does the job market look in Africa at the moment? The airline industry is in a deep deep recession worldwide, but how is Africa suffering?
Think a pilot with 250h with no experience get the chance of getting hired?

I'm not looking for a job, i'm not even a pilot, i'm just curious.:}

European Law states any flight on a Instrument Flight Plan you can log as IF time even if the complete flight is done in VMC conditions.

Was also strange for me but who argues with the law when I came back to Europe after training in the U.S. where you can only log IF time in actual IMC. /:}:D

Der absolute Hammer
29th Sep 2008, 16:33
IF time in log book? Reality time is time for let down.
If all flying done in South Africa then I take, for interview assess, 1/4 total time and 10 minutes for each hour. So..if TT = 4,000hrs, then 1/4 = 1,000hrs and 10mins/hr = 10,000minutes = 167hrs. With 167 hrs of let down practice, pilot should be pretty good. So..if he cannot fly let downs well with airmanship, then rest of log book hours are suspected. Therefore, no job. Damned simple.

Hey Guys,

I've been reading through the posts in this forum the last little while and I'm thinking South Africa might be a good fit for my next adventure. I was hoping you guys could give me the low down on the current job scene out there. I've got 1500 TT, 200 PIC, 1200 ME Turbine, currently flying SIC DHC6. Flown in North America, Asia and a bit of the Middle East. Do you think I'd have a decent shot of scoring a job or would it be wise to wait until I have a little more time before I head out there on the job hunt?

Cheers

Speaking about the forum...

I am currently rated Captain on the C212, 1500 TT logged, portuguese ATPL, been flying for Portuguese Air Force till now. Some experience in Africa. Flown essentially in S Tome and Principe (I know it is not Africa actually), but been to Dakar, Niamey, Bamako, Nouahdibou, Lome, Accra, Libreville and Port Gentil. Know something about living and flying in Africa. But still would love to make a living there. Do I stand a chance with an outfit in Africa?

Thank you very much for the replies.

Cheers!

I flew ATR,s as Captain in Kenya a while back try FLY540.COM and also check PRECISION AIR IN TANZANIA they operate a couple of ATR-42/72-500,s i believe.
Try google search both companies as they may have websites.

Ohh!!If you DONT MIND working in NIGERIA-LAGOS try search on OVERLAND AIRWAYS as well.In GHANA-ACCRA,ANTRAK AIR also operates 2 ATR-42,s not sure if they still running mate.

( For Low timers ofcourse :})

So please share some info.. and before someone tells me to do my own research.. I hv already done tht.. and Botswana was the one where i got some leads.. but still trying on that.. any info will be appreciated..

That is not how it works - if there are openings, the ones that are there in person will be the ones with chances. By the time you get there, the job will already have been taken. So the only way to do it in this region of the world is to show up and stick around like everybody else. But even that has been said a thousand times in this forum. Positions are generally not advertised, there is no need for companies to do that, as there are always enough low-timers sticking around to get in.

Hi guys

Just got notice from my employer a couple of weeks ago that at the moment they do not have enough work to keep me busy as a freelance captain on the twotter.

I have five years on the beast accumulating ~2200 hrs, ~1300 of them from the left seat. My TT is 5200 hrs. For the last three years or so I have been flying for both the Red Cross in Sudan, and various oil companies in Algeria.

I also have experience from the Caribbean.

I'm only looking for a rotational contract (4 wks on/ 4 wks off or similar) to keep wife somewhat happy.

If the conditions are right I would be open to do SIC work too. Tough times requires tough measures :(.

Any leads would be highly appreciated..

Gooney, things seem to have slowed down quite a bit lately for us. Even guys on permanent contract are told there is no job for them at the moment.

We had to pull out of Libya due to a diplomatic conflict between Switzerland and Libya. There are also a couple of contracts expiring around summer that they don't know if they will be renewed.

I know a lot of people are happy over the low oil price, but for us in the oil business it's killing us. Wife is in the same business so I can only hope her company will pull through this.

Here's to higher oil prices soon :ok: :).

In the jungle, most nations will endorse your FAA ticket.
Some ministry gorilla might (upon payment of a "commission") issue the papers.
As an example, Congo/Kinshasa...
Some nations where civilization exists with the CAA, might require some paperwork.
As an example, South Africa.
xxx
My advice for Africa. Get paid in advance, a return ticket in your pocket.
Non-payment of owed salaries... is a 3 days notice... then say goodbye.
To date, I am owed US$5,000 in Nigeria, and about same in Angola.
Both from some 10-15 years ago... Despite being very careful.
And for Congo/Kinshasa, terms are simple. Payment IN ADVANCE, CASH...

Good luck to you -

Start by looking somewhere other than Nigeria. Place is ready to implode, they dont pay bills, kidnappings getting more common and vicious resulting in death whether they get paid or not - government is corrupt, CAA is no better than Ghana or the other banana republics - they are the next country to have their AC banned in EU and beyond - big oil is getting fed up and some are pulling the plug. It is becoming another Somalia with no laws and lots of piracy and kidnappings.

Stay away from likes of IRS and a few others or, get 1.5 months in advance and soon as you hit the hours for the $$, give them one day to cough up or leave. DO NOT accept payment in Nigeria jingle - its becoming worthless on the open market and forex is going to KILL you with fees.

Hi,

This may be better in rotorheads forum - but will try here first.

Is there any expectation of an uptick in demand for heli flights (pilots) in South Africa during the world cup campaign.

If this is positive - then anyone have contacts for short term work for a very new JAA CPL(H) - hopefully by then !!

Thanks.

Hello All,

I am just starting up on a PPL - maybe Kenya or South Africa.

I am have a multitude of questions and want to get the answers from horses mouth as such.

Firstly, I am not able to afford the full fees so am looking for sponsorship. That aside I am also looking at volunteering to gain hours for a CPL. I know a number of people in Kenya who have businesses.
If anyone has done something similar I woudl appreciate any and all help, advice, warnings.

Look forward to a reply.

Hey everyone. I'm looking for some advice from those in the know. Currently, I am unemployed and looking for work anywhere in the world. I have my ATP, 2000 hours including 1000 jet(mighty mighty CRJ) 100 Kingair and the rest piston. I was just wondering if there's anything out there. I've been told that in general, one must be in Africa to find a job in Africa. Well, I'm going to Africa I guess...Any ideas of where to start looking and how to look? :ok: Thanks again!

Gooneybird
23rd Jul 2009, 06:10
Good hours.

Have you tried Voyageur, Canada? They operate at least one CRJ in East Africa somewhere I believe. You could try NAC for King Air 200 work, 100 hours on type is the minimum but with your ATP and jet time you shouldn't have too much trouble. The market isn't great right now but you are packing the right kind of CV so give it a shot and best of luck!

23rd Jul 2009, 07:13
Sorry but I beg to differ. Total time of 2000 hours is not great in Africa. Africa is going through a recession like the rest of the world and jobs are few and far between. Without sounding too negative, you are up against other problems like work permits, visas and validations whilst competing with the locals for a job.

I guess its all relative, your hours are good if you are looking to fly a C210 in the swamps.

gottofly
23rd Jul 2009, 08:47
You need to be in Africa personally to guage the flying scenario yourself....and if you are lucky to be at the right place at the right time, you will end up with a job.
I flew in East Africa for over 4 yrs.when I was trying to get a job,it took me 6 months to get a work permit after I had 2 jobs lined up...took almost 8 months to sort out their license first.
I think your exp is good for Africa and you can get a job on Twin Otters or Beech1900m or the likes.Good luck:ok:

23rd Jul 2009, 13:07
Arik is definitely the place to go, large growing fleet of CRJ's, good pay and good rotation. Plus right place right time(right attitude) and you might find yourself being moved into the 737NG.

I have been flying in East Africa for 8 years now and am looking at getting out. Just like the rest of the world the recession is hitting here and things are really quiet!!! Tourists, NGO's, humanitarian aid operators of the sort, etc do not have money to donate or pay for flights!!!
Think twice about packing your bag and and buying a air ticket to your African destination!!! Even once you are here, you will have to deal with the authorities which is enough to make you pack your bags and go back where you came from.:ugh:
On a whole, flying is down and so is the pay, I suggest wait 12 months and see what it is like then!!!
I wish you all luck!:ok:

To answer the last question, Africa can be a place for great flying, opportunities but not at the moment. The African continent is still on the same planet and that planet is in a credit crunch, I have allot of friends working out there and they tell me it is not at all busy as it should be, so no hiring going on.

When I was there it was very busy and pilots were in demand, not anymore. But this industry has always been feast or famine.

not the African continent but if this is true/takes place then the upward motion of available jobs is on the horizon.

Cathay Pacific Luring Pilots From the Country

Julius Baumann (Business Day)

11 August 2009

Johannesburg — CATHAY Pacific, the Hong Kong-based airline, is recruiting in SA, a country highly regarded worldwide for the quality of its pilots .

In the latest edition of aviation magazine World Airnews, the airline called for applications from young recruits to join its 60-week pilot training course.

David Ryan, country manager of Cathay Pacific SA, said last week the airline had received about 70 responses and would begin interviews in Johannesburg early next year.

"SA is a steady, reliable market for Cathay Pacific. When we are actively recruiting, we endeavour to interview in SA at least once a year and we usually find candidates of high calibre."

While Ryan could not give the exact number of South African pilots working for the airline, he said the airline had about 100 pilots from Africa, making up about 3% of Cathay Pacific's flight personnel and had in the past recruited both experienced and ab-initio pilots.

Once accepted into the cadet programme, the recruits will begin with their training at Flight Training Adelaide in Australia and will have all expenses covered by the airline. After that, the new pilots will be offered positions as second officers with Cathay Pacific.

Anthony Laubser, president of the Airlines Pilots' Association of SA, said on Friday while there was no demand for pilots now, once the economy picked up there was likely to be an enormous shortage of experienced pilots. "So it is best to begin now as training an airline pilot takes years," said Laubser.

He said in recent years several experienced Boeing 747 captains had been recruited for Cathay Pacific's cargo division as well as a number of second officers for the mainline carrier. Singapore Airlines also recruited several experienced South African pilots last June, he said.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) CEO Colin Jordaan said earlier this year there had been a 5% drop in the number of new pilots in SA receiving licences , in the year to March, compared with a 13% increase last year.

Global demand for experienced pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers and technicians required an immediate intervention as it was a lengthy process to identify and train candidates.

Jordaan said the CAA was exploring initiatives to help develop sought-after skills in the industry, including a scheme to provide upgrade training for pilots and an African aviation training initiative for basic training for pilots and technicians.

Yes, I have seen this before with this address-also I think it has been on African Aviation Forum.
You see, while having an Instructor rating on the EMB 120 on an ICAO(SA) licence, not my JAA one, and although it has been many years since I last flew one, I will not just bungo off all my private details to some trifling little blurb on the internet.

Actually - I happen to think that you are genuine sslut but that is regretably not the point. People my age have been messed around so often that some of us just cannot be fagged unless the work comes to us. So post some juicy details, no money figures of course, just where and whether we have to share a room or a bathroom and perhaps someone will bite?
