I have just been sent this at work. Has this been seen here?

Number 10 Downing Street has approved a petition that was launched requesting a new public holiday falling on the Monday after Remembrance Sunday in November each year.

To be known as the National Remembrance Holiday; it's purpose is threefold:

1. To emphasise the remembrance of those servicemen and women who have given, and continue to give, their lives for Britain.

2. To remind people of the importance of protecting our Nation and what it stands for.

3. To break that 3 month period between the August Public Holiday and Christmas when there are currently no long weekends, especially as the UK has fewer public holidays than most European Countries.

Not a bad idea. I have always fancied one on or about 21 October to be called Zoom's Mum's Birthday, or even Trafalgar Day. The former event might not be too well known, the latter too sensitive for our trans-manche neighbours. But the timing is good and the weather is likely to be a bit more pleasant than in mid-November.

Quite surprised at the lack of comment here.

Just wondered if anybody has signed the petition.

I have mixed thoughts:

I agree that this country could do with an additional Bank Holiday and I certainly agree with the need to remember our servicemen and women who have given, and continue to give, their lives for Britain.

However, I am not sure that a Bank Holiday should be associated with Remembrance Day. I think a lot of people would do less remembering and think more on the lines of “great a 3 day weekend”.

I believe it may also impact on Remembrance Day Parades i.e. less attendance.

Any comments?

I totally agree with you SRENNAPS,

I'm much more in favour of a Trafalger day, possibly one of our finest military victories, a day that certainly played a major part in shaping how we live today. Any concerns that it would offend the French are way off the mark, IMHO, I don't think they care too much about what happens beyond their borders!

I feel that a bank holiday that fell immediatey after Remembrance day would only have a negative effect on how we remember the fallen.
