Hi, does being in the air cadets and achieveng solo standard on a gliding scholorahip put you ahead of anyone when it comes to CTC applications and airline jobs in general or is it not really any help? thanks

To put it bluntly.....no!

However the interest you show in aviation may help, at interview, but only very slightly.

They are more interested in your 90k! couldnt give a toss if you flew before. As are most flight schools! dont get bitten!

The ATC is an excellent organisation. If you do well, and particularly if you participate in something such as the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold, you will have an edge on lazy, fat 'civilians' who slob out in front of computer games and yoof-tube!

Some organisations manage scholarship awards for flying training. If there's one thing that is common amongst most high quality finalists, it's that they've been 'spaceys'...:ok:

Anything like ATC, Sea Cadets, CCF, ACF, Navy Gliding Scholarships, Duke Of Edinborough ETC. will help you.

People like to see you have interests and get out and do stuff (especially when it involves teamwork).

Obviously it wont be a case of oh look you went to ATC.... by pass the apt tests!

You will have to still do well and pass the APT tests but it will help you for interviews etc and also will give you something to talk about if they say something like "an example where you have had to lead.."

I have a couple of friends who spend ALL their time glued to the computer player games like medal of honour, Battlefield and WOW and yeh they are top ranks on those.. but it isn't real life. And it will not help them with anything. It is a shame to see them waste their lives really!

Anyway.
overall point is that anything like that and interests etc will help and is worth telling them about at the end of the day!

Getting into CTC is based on aptitude and personality. The purpose of training is to increase aptitude. It follows then that any flight training you can get through any method is likely to make you more competitive. This doesn't mean a dim-witted klutz can join ATC and improve enough to get a place at CTC, but it does bode well for intelligent young men and women who pursue every opportunity at self-improvement they can find. Furthermore, some of the programmes/scholarships mentioned in this thread are given based on merit, so effectively a competitive selection will have started the weeding down process already, again enhancing the CTC prospects for those chosen.

OK - so does the air cadets have an effect on your future employable prospects - yes and no. As previously mentioned, it is YOU that must perform at interviews, not your track record. As a former CWO (now plt off) and a person elegible for future airline jobs, I think that the ACO instills a strong sense of leadership, group dynamics, self discipline and a practical interest in aviation (as the corps aims to do). The other things like GS, DofE etc shows a variety in activities - and you can use this as a tool to your advantage in your interview as it promotes positive conversation. All in all, do not fell devalued by what you have gained as a cadet, your classification exams alone can in some cases give you more in depth knowledge than a new PPL holder! So, bottom line is that it has no advantage unless you can differentiate between a former cadet candidate vs a normal candidate in a nutshell....but that would be mean now! any Qs? PM moi ;)
