Our F Manual recommends flaps 25 in gusty conditions or where noise on approach is a factor.

I have been trying it for a while and much prefer the handling qualities in this configuration to flap 30, especially, but not only in strong winds.

A little higher pitch attitude and a couple of knots faster on final, with noticably less power, but more precise and stable (goes where you point it better) are my impressions.

Thoughts, comments ?

I've done a few and they dont seem to be a big deal. I believe our company is looking into it (and talking to boeing about it). As you say the power is a bit less than with flaps 30 (around 1.15 EPR?) so we could save a bit of fuel. There is an issue, I think, with the possible increased risk of tail strike during the flare..

Its just simple F=ma. The faster you go the more load on your control surfaces. Not only does it help directional control, but the aircraft is quicker to respond. Hence the approach becomes more repeatable at lower flap settings.

How much is the tail "clearance" reduced, as against a F30 landing, on the 757/767?

I would think there would be more tail clearance

We are able to read our pitch attitudes, shortly after take off and landing.

With flaps 25, the highest I have seen is 6.5 degrees.

One to two degrees higher than with F30, but there is still plenty of clearance.

Our manual shows 38 inches clearance at 9.5 degrees (or over 3 feet) for example.
