I wonder if anyone could answer some questions for me about VFR flying in America. The questions are as follows: -

1) Are all traffic patterns Left Hand unless stated otherwise by "RP" which indicates Right Pattern?

2) How do you know what height the Traffic Patterns are? I was told you just add 1,000ft to the airfield elevation, but is there any truth in this?

Many thanks for any comments and feedback.

Do not assume that the traffic patterns are always 1000 ft AGL. This may be the case in most places but there are a number of exceptions, especially at airports with parallel or intersecting runways. The relevant heights are listed in the green facilities guide with the abbreviation TPA.

Correct on both - just one obvious addition to the post, if you are flying into a controlled airfield you fly the pattern the tower give you.

Where in the US are you hour building?
