Shows an A-10A strafing a bit too close for comfort. Surely the JTAC didn't call it in this close to friendly troops or does anyone know if this was a situation where the A-10 pilot got a bit confused on the location?
Note the characteristic noise of the GAU-8 right at the end.

Ummm... 100'+?
That's not close... and yes, ground troops in trouble often do call for suppressive gunfire to be laid down much closer than that, if needed.
My old CO won the Dhofar Star in the 1970's for DF'ing his own position, with mortars mounted vertically.
I wonder where the controller was when he called that..? :}

I believe that there is now a 'C' version of the Hog, not sure if the new avionics etc make for a more accurate targeting.

Pretty much most of the rounds hit dead ground... nothing there so he missed the target i assume anyway!

They weren't most of the rounds - the footprint of the gun can be pretty big indeed. :eek:

4200rpm *4 secs= 280+ rounds on target.

I'm not sure the Jock Squaddie filming it will be as delighted with the long term effects should all that dust be laced with DU. Is the DU/HEI ammo still standard or is an alternative combination used for theaters with predominantly 'soft' targets?
