Remove it.
I'm receiving a Dell laptop tomorrow and the first thing I'm doing is downgrading Vista and burning my Norton Install CD..

McAfee is ****e. It slows down a computer more than any virus, I reckon. Get rid of it and install AVG free from the web.

Used AVG for about six months and found it slowed down the opening of files to the point where you found yourself screaming (particularly if you were on the phone and trying to retrieve files for reference - always found myself apologising to the person at the other end of the line for interminable delays).

I've now changed to avast! and guess what: on the first scanning of all my files (which were regularly scanned by AVG), I found no fewer than 46 events of threats, worms and trojans!

Some users find bloatware like McAfee or Norton work well.
Seems you're not one of them.
The "big three" freeware AV's are Avast! (http://www.avast.com/), AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/), and Avira (http://www.free-av.com/). (I use Avast, find it problem free in all respects.) They're all pretty well respected and offer good protection. Avast is maybe the most configurable, and the engine/detections in the free version is identical to the paid one.
Be sure to run the removal tool (http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html) after uninstalling McAfee from the control panel.
Check that you have a firewall running after removing it, too. Vista has a 2 way firewall built in, XP's is effective, but only blocks inbound. There are a few good free third party firewalls around, and at least 4 good free antispyware applications if you need some of them, also.

Echo much of what has already been said - certainly use the special removal tools to make a proper job of it.

Using Avast + ZoneAlarm for many years now and no problems with either.

I'm amazed that people put up with the effects of McAfee!

Several folks locally have asked me to look at their computers, after mentioning speed problems with "new" machines. They all had McAfee "free" with the machine, then paid to renew it after the free month.

They now all have ZoneAlarm, AVG, Spywareblaster, and AdAware.

I've never had any speed problems with AVG - stuff opens pretty fast.

A friend advised me to use Kaspersky Paid version today.

Does anybody have experence with this software and how it performed?

Why pay for something when you can get something equally as good free?
