If I were thinking of picking a new callsign....

Where would I find a list of those currently allocated and from whom would I have to deconflict the new moniker?

Many thanks in advance.:ok:

Ask Ops.

There is a book of "Formation Callsigns" which gives several callsigns for each sqn and also callsigns for the station.

In Jan 2006 there was a FS at HQ STC (HQ AIR) who kept the database and said yes/no to particular requests. The main purpose was seemingly to avoid duplication.

I was surprised at how easy the process was ... a quick phone call backed up by an email was enough to get us the callsign; getting it published in the Mil AIP was more tricky, so it was published as a recurring NOTAM for quite a while.

I still chuckle whenever I speak to a stude pilot who is asking for GCI for the first time.

"You want me to call you what?!?!"

Everytime!

How you got away with that one STH, I'll never know but top job!

You really should get some work done. All those taxes I'm paying, and no sign of you contributing to my defence....

Oh bugger, and I've been writing scripts in which I have picked callsigns out of mid-air.

Is this information I can get hold of?

(And who's "spartan", who keep being used in examples people give me)

Maple 1 has got the right idea. I used to be at a secret Italian location where one of the few perks was selecting the callsigns for our singleton airtests. So cue the brainpower on all sorts of expressions that end in 'One' and then compress to 5 letters as that's all the flight planning computer can cope with hence:

Slipa One
Chosn One
Holin One
Givva One

By now even the less gifted pilots will be getting the idea:ok:
