Regarding the civil identification registration letters painted on airliners, up until around 1970(I think) it was mandatory for these to be worn below the port wing and above the starboard wing, as well as either on the rear fuselage or tail fin. Does anyone know exactly when the requirement for the painting of this above the starboard wing was relaxed? Was this decided by the FAA,CAA or IATA perhaps and did this relaxation apply to other civil aircraft, apart from airliners?
