As this thread has been dormant for over a week, perhaps we should consider some innovation, like "Silhouette Challenge" , which no longer deals exclusively in silhouettes.

A while back i proposed a "What Interior" thread which was suppressed on grounds of there being "too many challenge threads" - but would seem a logical extension of scope to include all interior views in addition to cockpits.

Doug

13th Mar 2010, 12:49
;)Interesting idea, Doug, and it does seem obvious that the "What Cockpit" concept has dwindled away. I'm kicking myself for not participating more than I did. Sorry 'bout that.

As for "What Interior" as a replacement, I speak only for myself and I confess to being biased (I spent too much time up front with the flying glass, I guess) but personally I can't get interested in what was happening down the back.

Errrr, unless there's another drunken sports team back there. That was often a worry. ;)

Cheers,

Glenn

Doug.
There are still plenty of cockpits out there. However, I agree the thread has slowed down considerably over the recent months. Before going down the "interiors" route I do suggest you put the idea to the moderators before launching it. The problem being I can see we could get many different interiors for the same aircraft type.
Mel

Ozbeowulf

The concept would have been to extend the scope rather than replace the cockpit content

Mel

The mods disapproved last time so probably would do so again - Silhouette Challenge seems to have extended scope without the need to re-apply. i agree nobody wants to see loads of different , say, 737 interiors but the last 100 years would probably provide sufficient variety

Lets leave it ....at least until the next prolonged silence.

Cheers Doug

Not exactly a cockpit although presumably this instrument panel was once in one. The owner has asked me to identify the aircraft type it came from. The unusual shape suggests that it's not a generic basic six. The only information known to the owner comes from a tag stating that it was last overhauled by Kingsford Smith Aviation at Bankstown (Australia) in 1969. The instruments are of American manufacture. It is not known what instrument once occupied the vacant hole. The panel was originally thought to have been from a sailplane but the ASI suggests otherwise.

http://www.adastron.com/aviation/vault/instrument-panel.jpg

evansb
14th May 2010, 20:12
Unless the missing gauge is a variometer, and I doubt it, the wear pattern would suggest the panel is an instructional/calibration panel. It is unusual though, given the vintage instruments.

OK, so what we know is it is somewhat more recent than '80s, civil, not Trago Mills, 2 in UK, in a foreign aerobatic team, single engined piston with fixed pitch prop(!!) and a really together looking cockpit with nice stitched leather trim.

Its not some sort of Ermintrude or Cap is it? Doesn't look French...

Who on earth uses a fixed prop in an aerobatic team????
Surely its not got some clever single lever engine control?

Hmmm!

Time for another clue, methinks...

This aircraft design appeared in the first third of the last century. It was developed from an even earlier design (that was named after a Roman god and an insect) when that company was purchased by the man whose name became part of the generic name of the aircraft in these cockpit pictures.

Glenn

sycamore
15th Jul 2010, 14:46
Nearest I can get is a Davis D-1-W; And pls explain the Roman god bit.....

ozbeowulf
15th Jul 2010, 22:12
Congrats, Sycamore! :D You have control....

It is indeed the Davis D-1-W shown here at Rhinbeck (I think.)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg192/ozbeowulf/wotzit_Xacrft.jpg

The Roman god and insect clue was probably too obscure, but it refers to the Vulcan Moth, a design from the Vulcan aircraft company, which Davis bought. Apparently, Davis modified the Vulcan Moth (I believe he added the elegant elliptical wing trailing edges, etc) and called it the Davis Monoplane.

From what I could uncover online, although the total production was only sixty aircraft, there were several variants. Eleven of those were D-1-Ks and, later, eight of those D-1-Ks were further modified to become D-1-Ws. I do not know, but I suspect, that the main difference was the engines installed.

The Meta-Sokol has a few interesting peculiarities. It's not a nosewheel aircraft, but it's not exactly a tailwheel aircraft either. The third wheel is a "fuselage wheel".
