Having seen the very good thread about the L1011 Tristar, I thought I would do the same with the 1-11.
If anyone knows how many are still flying, where they are, and has any photos please let me know.
I for one would be very interested to find out how many are left!
Pete

Next time I get a day departure from UAAA, I'll let you know which one is on regular flights there... I am sure it's on the P4-xxx books

The operator out of Almaty in Kazakstan (above) is called Scat. You can find their One-Eleven schedule here (sorry, in Cyrillic only). I see it even gets to Moscow DME sometimes.

The three Northrop-Grumman research 111s are very active, in and out of Baltimore. Looking at flightaware.com the other US-registered ones have been up and about within the last couple of months too.

N161NG, N162W, N164W, N111JX, N999BW, N200EE.

Glad to see there are some still out there :) Wish they put RR Tays on them in the 80's probably would have had loads more around today.
Anyone know if the Dee Howard Tay powered 1-11 is still out there?

Is the Kazakh one therefore the only one still operating passenger services ? Whose type certificate are the remaining aircraft still on ? BAE or the Romanians ? The one in Kazakhstan is one of the Romanian-built ones, the others listed here are British built.

Hi,

Yes, I can confim that the 1-11 is very much alive and well in the former CIS countries, I've seen the 1-11 in both Almaty (2) and Bishkek (1) operating passenger servies.

I'd prefer to believe this site which places the active number at 22 (others are stored/abandoned etc/):

As I know ,in Romania the VIP BAC 1-11 is no longer flying , it was replaced with a Bae 146 I guess...Nevertheless in the '70 and '80 when BAC1-11's were one of the main Tarom fleet ,some of them were wet leased to Ryanair and Lauda while these launched their services....

The Romanian One Elevens did indeed get Ryanair off to a start. It was shortly after Perestroika and every Romanian pilot eligible jumped at the assignment in the West - apparently quite a few test pilots from the factory pulled rank and came over to Dublin. Their piloting skills with the One Eleven may have been top notch but their English wasn't and after some early confusion (or rather non-comprehension) they were prohibited from making PA to the pax except in an emergency, all normal announcements being by the cabin crew.

Pity poor ATC then ! Anybody remember them on frequency ?

All the 3 Omani ones were active earlier this year and I believe at least 1 has been to Hurn recently for a check.

WHBM,
as I know, some of the pilots hired for ryanair were english speaking as well as they could flying a westbuilt plane(bac 1-11 was the 1st plane made in west wich has been bought by a former socialist country for its flag carrier tarom) and being able for an usual conversation....If they weren't capable to tell fairy tales to their pax in an oxford english....forget it!

Sorry airman13,
But LOT operated Convair CV-240s and Viscounts and CSA flew Brittanias,so these were the first western built aircraft to be operated by former socialst countries national airlines and Aeroflot actually ordered Caravelles and all this was a long time before Tarom got 1-11s

Irishair2001, agree with you ,just adding 1st west built a/c with double flux engines ,2 flight deck crew ,flown by a socialist air carrier...:D

Two ROMBAC One-Elevens are still flying with Romavia. These are YR-BRE and YR-BRI and they are flying alongside the BAe 146s. I saw YR-BRE take off from Otopeni on 30Oct on an air test while YR-BRI was rolled-out after a maintenance input the same day. This last aircraft has recently been test flying with Stage 3 hush-kits but has now reverted to Stage two while the results of the programme are assessed by the Romanian authorities. As far as I am aware TAROM was the first Eastern Bloc carrier to operate new western built short haul jet airliners and I cannot recall Aeroflot buying or operating Caravelles. The Britannias and Viscounts operated in Czechoslavakia and Poland were used examples.

Saw one in the circuit at Boscombe yesterday at 15:00ish. It's funny how a once common sight can now seem so out of place, (T tail and rear mounted jets).

It's very rare that I venture into the spotter's section lol.

The Omani 1-11's are still flying.

No hushkits.......fabulous noise!

There's a few pics on airliners.net Nice pale blue and white colour scheme.

They'll be replaced fairly soon and am in the process of scrounging a ride on one soon if RAFO are feeling kind hearted.

Believe it or not, those RAFO One-Elevens are Stage 2 hush-kitted.

Actually, with the arrival of the Embraer and Canadair RJs there are now a couple of thousand T-tail rear-mounted jets around, far more in the air than in the heyday of the One-Eleven, DC9, et al.

Hmmmmmmm, yeah, but,...........

I still maintain the T tail is a lesser breed now as I think back to the 1970's under the Ringway approach: 1-11, DC9, Tu134, F28, 727, Trident, Tu154, Il62, VC10, and I suppose Caravelles are almost T tails. Besides, the Embraer and RJ are not [I]real[I] airliners they're just stretched business jets.:E

Don't know.

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1290753/M/

That's some business jet ! Must be longer than a basic One-Eleven.

And if you go to Russia the majority of the 134s and 154s are still around.

RAFO had the choise of finishing the hush kit to get them to stage 3 but decided not to go for it. The aircraft had the airframe side done but declined to pay the further money to finish the job.

A search was done to do the job through various agents but RR wrote quite a direct letter to RAFO HQ stating that if any ' outside modification agent' carried out the work then the warranty was null and void!

There was enough problems between CAA/FAA and RAFO stating they were the Air Authority and had the final say in what they could do with their a/c.

When the new minimum vertical separation limits were annouced they nearly had a hernia. This required an FMS at least, and for an air force that was still running its engineering software on 486 computers, (2001), this was the final straw.

Still, they were still, probably, the youngest 1-11s out there. (552 was a spring chicken. Lucky if she did 2 hours a week).

Remember the day's of freezing one's taiters of on "A" pier at ringway logging BA 1-11's.

Anyone remember the time G-AVMT was reverse pushed into a baggage truck.

Looked quite spectacular, but thankfully, I don't think anyone was hurt.

Akrotiri Boy,
So the F28 has gone, you might have just noticed some F70 & F100 replacements to it.

DC9, well MD80/MD90/B717, I still see a lot of TU134's when on my travels, even had the guts to fly on one a couple of years back, they're still around.
