A totally awesome Typhoon display at Waddington! Thanks to the aircrew of ZJ801! I've heard rumours that this was the pilots last display - Anyone confirm?

The Typhoon display started after an air power demonstration by a Tornado GR.4. By this time (1716) the sun was low in the sky.

What are those black scuff marks round the wheel wells?

Strange you heard that, Teej.

I got it on fairly good authority that it was a sneak preview of a prototype 2008 season display.

Maybe the chap in the back seat is the new jock?

Bastard.

And a show of photos from our front line SH/AT to top off the Op Tempo going on at the moment......oooh sorry, no pics from the front line - it might compromise the news of our involvement.

...BTW, nice show chaps....If only I was younger

I do hope to the heavens that the services of Mister TEEJ are hired often by the folks in the RAF for PR purposes.

If otherwise....

....WHY THE HELL NOT?!

Each time I see a thread like this (started only in July when the IAF came to Waddo), I visit it again and again - and not to mention forwarding the link to friends!

Strange you heard that, Teej.

Probably incorrect - never listen to gossip?!

What are those black scuff marks round the wheel wells?

Just a guess at dirt on the wheel well bulges?

Some play around in Photoshop

Teej

It was officially the very last display of the season, including all non-public events.

Maybe that's what you heard?

There are plenty of photographers out there who can take a half decent photograph, and some parts of the RAF do use them.

Unfortunately there is also a lot of photographers out there who can't take a decent shot, or don't know how to use some basic photoshop operations to tidy their pictures up.

If you like to look at aircraft pics, you should look in on UKAR, or Warplane, to name but a few. The last thing you want, is every swinging dick with a digital camera, posting their pics on here.

Nice shots TEEJ, like the 2nd last one.

Its caused by the (Dirty/oily) undercarriage ground lock warning pennants flapping around in the wind hence their circular shape.:ok:

Of mine it would have to be the first Typhoon shot.

My favourite image of all time is this shot of an Airbus A340.

I see the Euroblighter is keeping up the RAF tradition of filthy, dirty aeroplanes.....

Back in F4 days, we couldn't believe how immaculate the German Navy F-104s were which came over on NATO exchange, compared to the scruffy things we flew.

I recall Hunters at Brawdy so dirty you could barely see the markings - and that was back when they had white in the roundels.

Why do the UK's aircraft always look so utterly tatty, when compared to anyone else's?

Wrathmonk
18th Oct 2007, 19:51
Because they are busy doing what they were intended to do.

And because we don't waste time washing them all the time.

And if we did wash them some old and bold passed over has been would complain how we spend too much time washing aircraft rather than flying them like God intend us to. Not like in his day of course.

Or does it get slagged off because it is the Typhoon.

"Because they are busy doing what they were intended to do."

Granted that may be true of SH and AT assets and all aircraft in Bliar's war zones - but the EuropHoon is hardly 'busy doing what it was intended to do', I would suggest.

By all means waste your time with personal insults, I care not a jot. It merely belittles you.

Beags,

As much as many of us share your viewpoint, and would like to do something about it, we just don't get time....well, not on the swing wing pointy thing anyway.

insty66
18th Oct 2007, 21:21
Even in 1942 there was a difference between RAF aircraft and those of other nations. Insty snr moved from Hurricanes to B25 Mitchells whilst in the desert and was amazed how clean the American aircraft were compared to our own.
Funnily enough he mentioned performance over appearance and also said that the aircrew didn't give a hoot so long as they could fly & shoot!

I saw those piccies earlier today and my reaction was "it's beginning to look like a proper RAF jet now" a bit dirty and and working hard toward being ready asap, despite opinion to the contrary.

At least for a while we'll have a RAF that boasts Fighters, Bombers (I know, not strategic), Ground Attack, AWAC, SH, Tankers, Recce(ish), Transport, SAR (if I've forgotten any one my apologies) A multi faceted Force that should be encouraged to grow, not one allowed to be reduced to support roles only with no ability to defend it's self or those on the ground.

btw jobza, since when did you like washing aircraft?:p

forgot to say excellent pictures btw

And being busy with what they were intended to do, right now, means working up to do the job in hand. Not that you would know what that is of course.

And what personal insults do you refer to? If you feel the cap fits then feel free to wear it - or as you say "me thinks he does protest too much".

Your constant cynical comments against the current RAF (be it the UAS, the training system, the aircraft etc) belittle those who are working hard to make it work. Check the notice on the door - this forum is

... a forum for the professionals who fly the non-civilian hardware, and the backroom boys and girls without whom nothing would leave the ground. Army, Navy and Airforces of the World, all equally welcome here

You fail these criteria on many counts. Not a personal insult. A fact. So be a good chap and have the decency to be polite and civil when a guest in Dannys Military Aircrew forum. It is Typhoon. CAS is Torpy. CINCAIR is Loader. Have some respect .... or maybe someone may post what you were known as...:E It is very obvious you have little time for Mr Wratton, or BAe or the current government but maybe those comments are best for Jet Blast.

You often offer good advice to newbies and those who want to step outside into civil aviation. Which is good. And some of your WIWOV x 2 / WIWOP / WIWOH / WIWOG / WIWOB are very funny. Stick with what you are good at.:)

Even though I am not involved in your little spat, I also, being old and bold, find your remark childish and combative. So that's you then in a nutshell I suppose? Don't forget that, when you eventually grow up, you too will be as you describe. If you grow up, of course.

Clockwork Mickey Mouse

Thank you for your kind words.

Not meant to be childish but you're right it was combative. After all it is the Military Aircrew forum not the knitting circle. What would you rather have - spick and span jets that look very nice or jets covered in dirt because they have been doing their job (whether that be in Iraq, the Stan, the Falklands, on Q or just training to do the job). Certainly I didn't give a 5hit how dirty my jet was when walking for either an op or trg mission. In fact, it used to pi55 me off no end when Gp ordered we put aircraft through the wash bay before going to a static display so as not to spoil Joe Publics photo opportunities - wasn't you was it?;). And would you rather have our over worked groundcrew scrubbing them clean or fixing them to in order to feed the demands of the frontline?

By the way, I'm plenty grown up thanks very much. And when I hang up my flying boots, flying suit and gloves for the last time, whilst I may still lurk these boards to keep in touch with humour of military life, I certainly shan't become one of the WIWO... brotherhood.

No, you are possibly adult but certainly not grown up or you wouldn't be gurgitating such bile. This spat is nothing to do with keeping jets clean. It's about you being unnecessarily rude to your elders and betters.

As for your knitting circle comment - yes, this is a military aircrew forum. So if you feel so strongly about keeping it military, why then are all the threads you started about tax, places to eat, M25, Cairo etc? Very interesting perhaps, but contrary to the self-righteous position you seem to be adopting on this thread.

Fantastic photos by the way. Wish I had been at Waddington myself, but my wheelchair had a puncture.

It reminds me of why the UK lost its lead in computing, because they couldn't find a way to make the CPU leak oil!!!..:)

Sorry Sir won't do it again.

Edited coz I've had my morning upper and I was being juvenile again!:)

Anyway, enough thread drift. Fantastic phots by all - love the explanation behind the dirty around the wheel wells. If we painted all the jets very dark grey or black we wouldn't see the dirt .....:p

I remember standing under a really scruffy F4 in a hangar in RAFG and being told how much lighter and faster it would be after a paint-strip and respray. Can't remember the numbers but they were impressive

Because they are busy doing what they were intended to do.

Ah yes, the sandy barren wastes of Cottesmore, bereft of Aircraft Cleaining Compound and a hose pipe.

Normally in pre-LEAN days the only things you needed to keep an aircraft clean non-operationally ie. fixed base ops were the specified 5A1 Cleaning Intervals, pride in what you do, plus a bit of time of course. Maybe its getting harder to get any of the last two for some frequently stated reasons.

Dan Gerous - I can't comment on the quality of photographers in the UK. What I can say is I know for sure TEEJ takes some of the best pictures I have ever seen, and that his pics are worthy of being used by the RAF for PR purposes. Alright?
