Not strictly aviation related, but given the number of people here who will have intimate local knowledge - seemed the best spot to post....

Am in process of relocating from Manchester to Lincolnshire, with Mrs Stretch & 2 sprogs. My stomping ground was always S of Lincoln - Sleaford etc, and many years ago!! Now looking at villages N of Lincoln, particularly Scotter, Blyton, Kirton in Lindsey, Saxilby and Market Rasen.

Anyone got any useful (current) insights into any of these locations (or any other recommendation) as a place to put some new roots down?

Cheers

Suppose I could have been pedantic enough to ask for constructive replies - what could be more aviation related than Lincolnshire, the very heart of our once great service.... (and other such bolleaux)

Apologies ok - I was looking to tap into some local knowledge....

Were I still in, that would obviously be the route. However, I left the regular service several years ago. I did though spend many years in the VR(T) afterwards, recently jacked that in too.

Now, if you haven't anything constructive to say, how about you get back in your box, and let someone else have a go, it was a genuine request for help - and when I was a "real" officer that was the sort of thing we did for each other....

If that's no longer the case, happy to delete the post and fetch hat, coat etc

The villages around Market Rasen are nice, but there's an ever-diminishing range of local services, the most recent being the phased withdrawal of Post Offices. Buses are scarce and the winter weather can sometimes have you hemmed in. I love it, all the same.

Market Rasen is in touching distance of Grimsby, Louth and Lincoln, so it's not as if you're completely out of it.

I used to live in Walesby just outside of Market Rasen, which is very pretty, but has absolutely nothing beyond some nice views and the odd passing car. Very pleasant, though, but if the Mrs is a home a lot, she might go mental (or more mental ;) ). Nearby Tealby has won 'UK village of the year' several times also. Very pretty. It has a Post Office in a shed that's open for 2 hours a week. How quaint.

Kirton in Lindsey is nice enough, but a bit too near the yellow skies of Scunny for my taste!

Trivia - Bernie Taupin (Elton John's songwriter, for the uninitiated) grew up in Market Rasen, and 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' is about his personal experiences in the town's Aston Arms pub.

Damon Albarn's (singer with Blur and later Gorillaz) Aunt and Uncle also own a potato farm just outside Market Rasen, where he sometimes used to hole-up and write songs.

Louth's very nice if you're thinking of going that far over.

Thanks so much Harrogate - that's just the sort of thing I was looking for!

Take a look at Ingham, just down the cliff from Scampton or Normanby by Spital on the other side of the A15.

Welton is also good as it has schools for nippers, shops and pubs. And Nettleham is popular.

I lived in Scothern when I was stationed at Sunny Scampton - a nice little village. But virtually no services. One pub and one little shop.. But convenient for Lincoln, Wragby etc.

Dunholme and Welton were both pleasant enough.

If you go too far into the sticks, though, it's a bit 'brother and wife'-ish.....and now and again there's the sound of duelling banjoes...

One rather sad aspect is the number of once proud RAF aerodromes now gone for ever in that part of the world.

Trying to track down an old Lincolnshire farmer I was told by his wife that he was

"raping down on the fen"

Sadly both have now passed on.

Stretch:

Here's one for you, might make you feel at home!

Just one thing to be aware of is the Easterrn By-Pass, one day they might get around to building it but it is worth taking into consideration for both it's postives and it's negatives.

Thera are also some nice villages to the South East and West of Lincoln if you are flexible !

What type of house are you looking for in particular?

If Louth figures in your thoughts it might be of interest that ELDC plan a big leisure centre there - some 13million pounds if they can raise it. Might add to your enjoyment - Louth golf club and Kenwick Park also contribute to the lifestyle.

Cheers one and all - really helpful info...

Really like the one at Scampton, but I think it's a little close to the A15.(Shame!!) Looking for anything with 4 - 5 beds, pref 3 receptions and a big garden. We are really hoping for the "sleepy village" atmosphere.
