Looking good!! :ok:

Edit - I can never get the Bl**dy photo to show up on my posts!! Any clues?

I'll try to find out what the tech reason is, but it would appear the link doesn't allow a copy of the image, so you will have to leave it as a link for the time being.

Edit - Thanks Senior Pilot, by the way, welcome aboard :ok:

First day on line this Saturday Oct 13th, will be operating out of Leeds base Sat/Sun, then from Sheffield Mon-Fri. Callsign Helimed98.

(Ps the pitch cases have now been painted white instead of yellow, so it looks the same as G-SASH apart from the weather radar dome of course)

Nice pics...

will it be twin pilot...?

any rumours of going onto nite ops...?

Flaxton Flyer

Single pilot ops, no plans for night HEMS at the moment. However, as this is a SPIFR machine, night transfers are not out of the question.

so who does one speak to to enquire about flying for YAS?

So why does one wait 4 years before asking a question about the Young Aviators Society?

tyl3r
13th Oct 2007, 22:06
If I'd been listening more intently then I might have been able to record the conversation verbatim. However at around 3pm this afternoon I heard an unusual call from HeliMed98 requesting departure clearance to which the response was

ATC: "Do you mean HeliMed 99?"

H98: "Negative, this is HeliMed 98 Echo, the Sheffield air ambulance...."

ATC: "HeliMed 98 Echo, after departure leave the zone via..."

Seems not everyone at EGNM is up to speed with its existence. I was hovering by Lima at the time and watching her come out between the hangers at Multiflight followed by 2x360 spot turns and then a no messing up-up-and-away into the murk that covered most of Yorkshire today was a real pleasure.

Flaxton Flyer
15th Oct 2007, 07:32
tyl3r - we did inform LBA ATC on two separate occasions that it would be '98 flying on Saturday / Sunday, seems like the message didn't filter down to the coal face. We'll let them off this one though, 'cos they do a brilliant job fitting us in and around their traffic, always at short notice.

Personally I wanted the Sheffield Aircraft to be Helimed66 to avoid any such ATC / Pilot confusion, but got overruled by the suits who knew better. :ugh:

It's hard enough remembering when you are Alpha, Echo or Zulu without sequential numbers to mess with your head as well!

drugsdontwork - first stop PAS. But remember, you need to look good on telly.:)

Difficult decisions for the ex mil SAR guys; £39014 year one salary for a hems captain at a PAS unit or £69000 for a year one sar captain at a CHC unit.

Depends whether one is fed up hovering over the sea at night, I suppose!

We'll let them off this one though, 'cos they do a brilliant job... ...I wanted the Sheffield Aircraft to be Helimed66... ...but got overruled by the suits...That wasn't meant to be a criticism of ATC; a chuckle item only on first day of operation. IMHO, they do an excellent job of fitting you in at a moment's notice.

Perhaps the 'suits' have bigger plans 99, 98, 97, 96, 95...?!?

Quick somebody call Colin Pilger - "Beagle2" Mars probe actually ended up in Lincolnshire. No wonder they couldn't spot it - they had the Hubble pointing the wrong way!

Last time I did that was in the middle of summer at Flappits Quarry near Keighley.

Flaxton's top tip for summer quarry operations - before landing place cabin vent to "OFF" position thereby ensuring that brownout conditions exist only outside the aircraft.:O

Haven't they also picked one up in the west country somewhere.
There's a shift in the balance coming me thinks, Devon will be going private in 2008 moving away from Bond!

quichemech
23rd Oct 2007, 23:20
The word is Devon are buying a 135, as for East Mids, if it stays part of County then it will be Bond, unless they join up with Warwickshire for a 109:confused:

Sloane get another 109 in service by the 'back door' method!....

"East Midlands Ambulance Service has selected a new supplier to operate an improved air ambulance service dedicated to Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.
And East Midlands Airport has been selected as the operating base for the helicopter.
The new arrangements will come into being on 1 April 2008.
“We are delighted to be able to make this announcement,” said Dave Whiting, Director of Operations at EMAS. “We have listened to people’s concerns and feel this is a ‘win-win’ outcome –
firstly, the base is maintained at East Midlands Airport and secondly we have secured the improved service we promised. We are getting a speedier air ambulance, able to take an additional patient, with longer flying hours operated, improved bad weather capability and a doctor as a
member of the crew.
“We are pleased that Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance have joined us to provide this service. They have a solid track record of operating air ambulances and they are highly skilled, innovative and ambitious. They really know the business and they are keen to connect with the people of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.

No just curious whether a service (that will be paid for from donated public money) can be "selected" without a public selection process!

eg; none of the other air ambulance charities involved with East Midlands Ambulance Service were asked by EMAS to provide any details of how they could support the Leicester, Derbyshire and Rutland area!

Euro Anchor
27th Oct 2007, 08:21
Only of interest to a few hems ppruners,I suppose, but got to the bottom of the strange EMAS "selection" proceedure for the new Derby/Leics/Rutland air ambo.

EMAS has already got about 10 of its own NHS paramedics on the several air ambulances serving its area. They really didn't want to lend any more.

Only Warwick/Northants charity would set up an operation with 1 EMAS paramedic and 1 doctor per day. The other local air ambulance charities would require 2 EMAS paramedics per day. So EMAS 'save' 4 paramedics. That's why they didn't even bother asking the other charities!

The reason they will get a 109 at East Mids is that's the sort Warwick/Northants are presently operating.

The only 109 air ambulance operation out of 24 air ambulances in England and Wales. Shows how popular they are as air ambulances!

(Curious how the Warwick/ Northants charity CEO and the MD of the local Augusta dealership appear to be associated with the same Chamber of Commerce! )

Bolk
27th Oct 2007, 19:10
Why do parts of the air ambulance world go for this ' Ours is bigger than yours' approach to PR? Surely the public would support an air amb without a tirade of negative comments about it's neighbours. I'm sure that each operation has it's strengths and weaknesses.

Seems a shame. HEMS looks like a great job but how do you put up with the constant politics and back-biting? Come on guys, play nice!

Euro Anchor
27th Oct 2007, 20:13
I agree Bolk!

On 25th October, at the press launch of the Augusta 109 as the new Leics/Derby/Rutland air ambulance, the Sloane pilot Paul Smith stated that the 109 was a "more technically advanced helicopter" than the 135 or 902 and that when it arrived on scene of an accident was able to shut down in only 2 minutes, compared with the 4-5 minutes of the 135 or 902 !!

Russell Sprout
28th Oct 2007, 11:22
4-5 minutes to turn off an explorer!!! i'd go for more like 30 seconds. I wonder if the people of Derbyshire realise that an air ambulance now operates out of Sheffield and between them, Lincs/Notts and Cosford/ Stafford cover the area quite well without the need to replace the one at East Mids.

As for the pro's and cons of an A109, i wouldn't really want to be operating a tricycle wheeled machine in the Peaks.....

Brilliant Stuff
28th Oct 2007, 11:44
I am disappointed in Sloane for brandishing such twoddle. I understand one might need to talk ones product up but not like this. This does not help our industry at all. It's bad enough the media get it wrong.

Euro Anchor
28th Oct 2007, 12:17
Its not just Sloane; East Midlands Ambulance Service are also putting out similar misinformation about the 109's abilities to justify their "selection process" (which was based round their decision not to supply any more paramedics to man the air ambulances covering the EMAS area.)

misterbonkers
28th Oct 2007, 12:49
and the source of the EMAS misinformation would be...?

Bolk
28th Oct 2007, 14:32
I'm confused by the 'improved bad weather capability':bored: The EC135 that previously covered the East Mids patch would have been a single-pilot IFR machine, the airport facilities remain the same and HEMS weather minima is HEMS weather minima whether you are flying a 109, 135, 902 or a Reliant Robin!

109.....Faster, better and cheaper! Are you sure this is not an early April fools as the new contract does start on the 1st April 2008.:)

Euro Anchor
29th Oct 2007, 09:03
The air ambulance operation (WNAA) that will raise cash for the new Leics/DerbyRutland Augusta 109 is fuelled by Carlsberg, apparently!-----

“As well as being a proven life-saver, WNAA is a highly visible medium and is a fantastic brand marketing opportunity for medium and large-sized organisations. It has by far the most superior service of any air ambulance organisation in the UK, and our continued aim is for it to become known among politicians and regional influencers as an example of clinical excellence.”

Euro Anchor
29th Oct 2007, 17:49
It will also be interesting to see if they can get enough volunteer doctors to cover the new service every day. If Warwicksire and Northampton have to start paying for doctors to cover the empty seat that EMAS won't fill with a paramedic then the punters of Leics/Derby/Rutland will end up paying for a very expensive service.
