Am shortly to travel to the US with BA. Can someone clarify what they mean on their website by:

Maximum dimensions per bag (H+W+L): 158cm (62in)

Does this mean the longest dimension acceptable is 62in, or everything added up is 62in?

Also, for baggage weight, it says:

Maximum weight per bag: 23kg* (51lbs)
* Please note: we will continue to accept a piece of baggage weighing up to 32kg (70lbs).

What weight limit do I pack to?

The size dimensions are a total - the H+W+L of your bag cannot exceed 158cm or 62in.

The weight is a bit more complicated!!!

Strictly speaking the weight limit of each checked in bag is now 23kgs. BA changed their baggage allowances in February and amongst other things, introduced excess baggage charges for bags weighing more than 23kgs.

However they ran into problems when people who had booked months before the new restrictions were introduced were suddenly being faced with hefty excess baggage charges at the airport, that had not been made clear to them when they booked their tickets! Obviously there were some rather annoyed passengers and BA has reacted to that by being flexible with the new rules until everyone has had time to get used to them!

I believe BA are still being flexible with people who booked prior to February, but if you booked after that and turn up with a bag weighing more than 23kgs you may well be expected to pay the excess charges if you want to check it in.

In short, stick to the 23kgs per bag weight and you'll be fine! Anything over that you might get charged for, and you won't be allowed to check in anything over 32kgs due to health and safety.

Hope this helps!
