Lighten up guys, I think he is showing some severe weather in Palma which I for one find interesting!

200m in heavy rain is HEAVY.:=

@eagle21, Thanks for that. I thought it was bad yesterday but still surprising how bad.

Busy time for the guy in the observation cab there.

@outofsync and avman

I think a ts of this magnitude is newsworthy here not least if you have a look at the rapid development (1530-40). So no argument from my side on that post, actually I found it quite interesting.

So, the rain in Spain fell mainly on........planes?

Hat, coat....

eagle21
5th Oct 2007, 09:47
It wasn't forecast to be that bad, and if you look at how quick it developed I think is worth alerting others.

I am sure some of you will find it more interesting if you were caught by it...:ugh:

Thanks everyone else and safe flying

OK, was in Palma in a hotel, asleep and woke up by the rain and flashing . Looked through the window and saw the phenomena. Yup, I preferred to be in bed and not landind an a/c in this..:=

Shoot, haven't seen anything like that through the Islands for many years, we got caught inbound back in the early 70s in a Comet and got a true heavy landing. Grounded 'til cleared and ferry home!

OKOK so I was a little sarcastic! (post deleted) But no one else seemed interested enuf to reply for some 12hrs... and I wouldnt have trusted the metars to be more than fiction. PMI weather reports, in my experience, are worth even less than a grain of salt!

been told winds light & variable, to land past horizontal windsock and tailwind of 18knots!

...just me 2 pence and a short recap of the events as I live on PMI and was home yesterday afternoon to "enjoy" this severe weather with my 3 kids on the ground in the living room.
This kind of severe weather phenomenons might be quite usual within other regions, but for PMI the supercell passing from SSW to NNE within an ours time was unseen before on the island and left partly catastrophic damage within its path. Too, it now brings a lot of bashing to the meteological institute on PMI for not given the slightest alert of severe weather, just mentioning a thunderstorm coming in.
We could see the weatherfront coming in over the Bay of Palma and while it closed up were aware that it would develop into something more than a "normal thunderstorm". Then "hell broke loose" within fractions of a second and we couldn't see further than 3 m with hail, heavy rain and a windforce we feared that the shutters would come away and the windows would go to pieces. I'm far from hysteric and as the electricity was already gone before, we had the house lit up by garden lights. So we just stayed put the 20 minutes the major forces hit and when it slowed down, went outside to see the damage.
On our property we got various almond trees torn into pieces by the windforce, the workshop behind the garage is now 4 poles looking skyward and several heavy items were sucked into the air and dropped on the opposite side of the main house ... just fierce wind wouldn't have driven them there.
Within parts of Palma and industrial areas, cars have been turned over by the wind and industrial sites have been totally destroyed. The damage caused is drastic and we're just thankful that only about 20 people were hurt, three of them said critically.
The airport was shut down for about 30 minutes due to severe weather and one part of the terminal connections damaged.
As I said before, in other parts of the world it might be "just another storm", but for us it was the fiercest weather force we've experienced within the last centuries.

Thankfully, the other 2 stormcells coming up from Algeria this morning passed by over the sea east of the island.

Stay save, everyone ;-)

So if the wind velocity was 60 kts, the a/p has to be closed ,so...too late because now, the summer and nice girls are away of sunny Spain....What a pity!

Sat through a similar storm on the ground at Las Vegas in Aug with gusts to 65 kt.

Question is ..... why is every report in what is obviously a very rapidly changing scenario finshed with NOSIG ????

I think that you will find that NOSIG refers to the fact that there is no significant change forecast to the existing weather, not that there is No significant weather.

Lowfield h,

NOSIG means that within the next 2 hours here are no significant changes forecast to the wx as given in the METAR. Clearly totally inappropriate in this case.

NSW =nil Wx, Appears within the main body of text
NOSIG = Trend. No significant change (expected within next 2hrs i think). Appears at the end of the text.

Well it may have been brief but it made a hell of a mess! I live in Génova, EC-YKA, and my power went off at 1736 hrs yesterday and came back on at 2210 hrs today.

...you've been lucky, cameronian, friends of mine who do live in Genova as well, had a power outage until nearly midnight and spent the evening in "Es Mussol" enjoying the candlelight *lol* ... You've had your "fair share" down there.

Thanks all for the weather reports. As Beagle said, that was the rain in Spain. I'm closing this one now but there is a TAF from Taipei of bad weather arriving shortly.:)
