View Full Version : One for the Personal Trainers
c-bert 2nd Oct 2007, 09:33 Right, Im just about to start a new fitness regime whereby I go for a 2 mile walk during my lunch break. Now, the question is, should I eat my sarnies then walk, or walk then eat? Which is better for me?
Answers on a postcard (or just write them here).
west lakes 2nd Oct 2007, 09:40 Always put fuel in a boiler before using steam:E
ScottyDoo 2nd Oct 2007, 10:14 Have someone ride a scooter in front of you with your sambos on the back seat.
Forkandles 2nd Oct 2007, 10:23 No. I won't go there... <snigger>
Howard Hughes 2nd Oct 2007, 10:29 It is more a question for a dietician than a fitness trainer, but here's my two cents anyway!
Eat after your exercise, as the take up of carbohydrates (sugars) to the muscles is most efficent in the hour post exercise. Also drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
Cheers, HH.:ok:
c-bert 2nd Oct 2007, 10:32 Dehydration!?? It's only a 2 mile walk! I'm not that unfit. I'm not. :{
Thanks for the advice though.
Hmm, a dietician you say? Does that mean I can post one of my turds to Gillian McKeith? I've been wanting to do that for ages...:E
Wait a minute, when do you take a fag break?
The SSK 2nd Oct 2007, 10:40 I put eating before or after exercise in Google and got lots of answers.
As far as I'm concerned, if it doesn't work up a damn good thirst it's not exercise. I take my post-workout carbohydrates in liquid form.
c-bert 2nd Oct 2007, 10:41 I am both straight and a non-smoker. Otherwise it would be a mile and a quarter before I collapsed into a pool of my own mucus in an uncontrollable coughing fit. Probably.
c-bert 2nd Oct 2007, 10:44 I put eating before or after exercise in Google and got lots of answers.
If I'd wanted a serious answer do you really think this is the first place I'd have looked? :hmm:

I recommend eating your sarnies INSTEAD OF the walk. :ok:
Howard Hughes 2nd Oct 2007, 11:14 If I'd wanted a serious answer do you really think this is the first place I'd have looked?
Gee thanks...;)
Rainboe 2nd Oct 2007, 11:18 Howard's right- my trainer says eat after exercise as that is when the body needs to refuel. Plus by eating before, you are diverting blood to the stomach to get the stomach digesting when it should be diverted to the muscles.
c-bert 2nd Oct 2007, 11:18 Harsh but fair I think. ;)
TabbyCat 2nd Oct 2007, 12:00 Let us know how you get on please; will this be once a week or more frequently? Are you wearing your trainers or your work shoes? Blisters will put you off....
TC.
c-bert 2nd Oct 2007, 12:19 So, the latest. Just got back from my (hopefully daily) walk. Having carefully considered all of the advice I have read (both here and on Google) I decided to eat my wedges before the walk, and the ancillary snacks after the walk. Pure genius I think you'll agree.
Still, I know I'm a pasty office-dweller because my skin seems to be leaking a clear, colourless fluid. Quite distressing I can tell you.
What is a pasty office rat looking for advice from a personal trainer doing on a pilotīs website? ;)
Confused of Oslo
c-bert 2nd Oct 2007, 12:35 I didn't use the word 'rat'. :(:*
As well as being an aero engineer I also happen to have a PPL. Enough?
I didn't realise Jet Blast was purely for the discussion of aviation...
TabbyCat 2nd Oct 2007, 14:34 Certainly not just aviation - I have seen marmalade, TV, and much much more only in the last few days :)
I'm sure you will be signing up for your first Triathalon in a couple of weeks!
TC.
nosefirsteverytime 2nd Oct 2007, 15:01 Juud, we are not non-pilot-ist here. :)
We aren't? :8
Are you absolutely sure Nosey?
Wrong day is it?
.... drat.. got it wrong again .... slinks away with her coffee pot ....
gingernut 2nd Oct 2007, 16:43 Breaking the Fast of sleep will be the key to stocking up your energy levels. :)
Devlin Carnet 3rd Oct 2007, 10:09 Depends if you want to lose weight or get fit,
Exercising whilst hungry will cause you to burn fat for fuel (as there is nothing else, save glycogen, which will deplete quickly.)
If it is purely to get fit, then eating before hand will give you the necessary energy fuel for your workout.
Howard Hughes 3rd Oct 2007, 10:28 If you eat first, the intensity of the workout will be less, due to blood being diverted to the stomach to aid digestion!
ScottyDoo 3rd Oct 2007, 14:58 Exercising whilst hungry will cause you to burn fat for fuel (as there is nothing else, save glycogen, which will deplete quickly.)
Exercising on an empty stomach means your body will deplete muscle protein for fuel, not fat. Your body will try to preserve fat if it thinks you're not gonna feed it.
While you may have plenty of fat stored, if you want to burn that blubber (metabolise it), you need carbohydrates.
Eat a little fruit and maybe consume something containing caffeine before exercise to provide the carbs. You burn more energy burning fat to provide the energy you need to perform the exercise.
Snack first, eat your sambos afterward.
Howard Hughes 4th Oct 2007, 07:45 Exercising on an empty stomach means your body will deplete muscle protein for fuel, not fat.
The breaking down of proteins is the result of days, if not weeks of low carbs. Most healthy people on a balanced diet would have enough energy to cover a two mile walk without eating first...
c-bert 4th Oct 2007, 07:49 Thanks for all the info guys!
Devlin Carnet 4th Oct 2007, 11:36 The only part of the human body that requires carbohydrate is the brain,
And only very small amounts.
Everywhere else can manage without.
