LPG QRA Shed update

Hi all, we are half way though our four day bolting/welding and painting marathon on the hanger frame, today was a goodish one, rain ruined play a few times durning the day, but we managed to finish all the bolting up (Yippppppeeeee) at last the end of that job !
We then began to wire brush the ruff bits and slap the undercoat on for a second time in 2 years, we got about 30% of the east side roof bay 'longeron's' painted all over.
We hope to get it all done over the next 3 weekends and if we do we will be calling in the roofing contactors :D

Well what a day, I would say one of the most memorable in the LPG's 19 year history, the weather was perfect, we were able to use 3 sissor lifts (3 painting teams) and we had a really good turn out, so we cracked the paint tins open and literally blitzed the under coating of the frame, we finished all of the roof structure by 3.30pm :D
We started the silver top coat but the grey primer hadnt properly cured so we decided to leave the silver untill next weekend.
So keep your fingers crossed for the weather next weekend and we should have finished it.

As an aside, correct me if I'm wrong.

The reason the transit van is green is that in the 80s, the RAF decided to 'tone down' all the vehicles to make them more warlike and camouflaged.

The reason there is a yellow stripe down the side is to stop people taxiing into the now invisible MT!!!

I thought that the reason for the yellow stripes was to indicate that the vehicle's ignition system had been suppressed, making it safe to be in explosive areas, (and also won't interfere with radio transmissions?)

What a fantastic project. If only I had the time to get involved in stuff like that.

Keep those updates coming, I'm sure all us Prunes look on in admiration whether we comment or not.

It might not have the glamour in the strictest sense, but those of us who can't wield a spanner or a stick, find that sort of stuff just as interesting.

As someone who is dropping a V8 into an MG at the moment, and who kinda likes engineering stuff anyway that involves proper hammers and real percussion adjustment, I want to know more. What is the shell going to be and what is the silver colour for instance? Normal topcoat paint?

Thanks for your comments chaps, sorry the subject bores some people, I just thought some would like to know how we are getting on with it, it will be the only one with two servicable Lightnings in it :)

The silver is the top coat which is how the hanger frame was origianlly painted, the Shell will be fitted with orginal form insualted cladding panels with 15% transparences in the roof, which is not original to how the three Q sheds were built (we dont have electric down there yet so need as much natural light as possible)

We are now in the postion to call the roofing contractors in to begin work, this is planned to begin on Mon 23rd Oct,so our two Lightnings will have a roof over their and our heads for the first time in just under 20 years.

Its all been done by holding open days, cash donations, raffles, etc etc and our had graft.

We still have long way to go with the fund raising and the rebuild but at least we are now very close to a roof

Nice work.

I spent a lot of hours on 728 at various stages.

The overwing externals made me laugh. We had to try and fit them during the Falklands conflict........."Just in case"
