AN investigation is under way after an ambulance officer used a taxpayer-funded emergency rescue helicopter to deliver her groom to their wedding.
The Courier-Mail can reveal the RACQ CareFlight Helicopter transported the partner of emergency medical dispatcher Naomi Huntington from Beenleigh to the Mt Tamborine wedding on September 8.
It is understood the wedding was attended by staff from the Queensland Emergency Medical System Co-ordination Centre at Spring Hill, including department manager Bev Rey.
Mrs Rey's husband took photos of the spectacular landing that have circulated among staff for the past few weeks.
The State Government provides $2 million a year to run the helicopter, code-named Rescue 992, so rescues can be conducted across southern Queensland from the Tugun base.
The helicopter is normally stationed in Toowoomba on Saturday nights.
The revelations are a further blow for the beleaguered Emergency Services Department, which is currently being audited over concerns record funding is being misused.
Director-general Jim McGowan yesterday referred the wedding use to the Crime and Misconduct Commission, citing a potential conflict of interest for a staff member negotiating a private arrangement to use the helicopter.
The Government's contract with CareFlight allows private use but only if the helicopter's ability to respond to emergencies is not compromised.
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts last night said any private use – paid for or not – was unacceptable on his watch.
"I do not support the use of emergency helicopters for private use, and neither myself or the Commissioner have any role in approving helicopter flights," Mr Roberts said.
