An online petition has been created to try to secure Indulgence Flights to the Falkland Islands for veterans of the 1982 conflict and family of the who fell in action.
Indulgence flights would make pilgrimages possible for more veterans. At present a limited number can be funded by SAMA82, otherwise the airfare of almost £1K falls on the veteran. The cheaper route costs a bit less but takes nearly three days. If Indulgence lights were available it would reduce the financial burden on SAMA82 and veterans who wish to make independent pilgrimages.
Pilgrimages are important, whether it be for a bereaved family member visiting their loved one's grave for the first (and possibly only) time, or for a veteran trying to come to terms with the effects o PTSD. PTSD affected Falklands veterans inordinately, being understood less in those days, and more veterans of the conflict have taken their own life than were killed in action.
