Lots of eloquent comments on the MOD Web from Lt Col Sanders, former CO of Basra Palace, on their withdrawal back to the airfield. But on tonight's BBC News, his response to a comment that his army was "defeated" was more blunt - he replied:

"That's bollocks! Does this look like a defeated army?"

Can we have more senior officers saying what they actually think please?

I think he said "complete b*****ks" actually, in that typically military fashion. Nearly fell off the sofa.

But good to hear a leader exploiting the right to free speech that we seek to defend - on the 10pm news too. Bet the silent majority loved it.

It's OK; it's a dialect pronunciation of the French "Bolleaux", meaning "Poppycock!"

Cheers

If I were asked the same question after I had led a BG through such a demanding Op tour my response would have been the same!.

Having worked with the Battlegroup on pre-deployment training I can honestly saw that they impressed the DS greatly. Much of the drive and profesionalism undoubtedly comes from a CO such as Lt Col Saunders.

Its about time those in positions of responsibilty actually say what they think! (within the realms of decency). What grips me is the manner in which Journos think "they have the right" to ask poorly phrased and sometimes offensive questions.

I am fully in favour of information being passed freely when there is no tactical disadvantage to do so, but sometimes it just makes you wonder what some people are thinking.

Made ABC Australia's website (http://abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/09/06/2025562.htm?section=justin) :D but no video :{

Here's the MOD's version (http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceNews/MilitaryOperations/4RiflesReflectOnBasraPalaceExperience.htm), which in many paragraphs fails to bring the heartfelt feeling one sentence can achieve!

Good to see him candidly express his views; more of that would be welcome instead of veiled (for which read: incomprehensible or meaningless) speech. Pity he's probably wrong.

The epitome of communication - ABC. Accurate, Brief, Clear.

Well done that man!

Has anyone else noticed the irony of British Military Policy being explained by Colonel Sanders?

Its the secret blend of herbs and spices that makes our popcorn basra bahjis so easy to digest!

What you are seeing is the very legitimate overflow of frustration brought about by the deliberate emasculation of the British Army by the present 'government'.

Not often seen before, now seen on a regular basis and all too often.

As my mum used to tell me:

"If you need to resort to swearing to make people laugh, you're f**ked!"
