ORIGINAL POST:

It appears that just after the Gatbash, there will be certain people 'caravanning' it down to Ciderset... ;)

So a proposal for a WAKEbash to follow on Monday 8th? the following weekend (13th) might be better for hangover recovery times, but not sure if the 'visitors' will still be in the area?

Further thoughts and suggestions will be gratefully received....

incidentally, WAKE is for 'Wyndham Arms, Kingsbury Episcopi', but again, if anybody has any better suggestions...?

Who's in? When?

R'66 :ok:

It appears that just after the Gatbash, there will be certain people 'caravanning' it down to Ciderset... Really? Who me?:E I'm hoping to arrive at a reasonable hour at my destination and can find my way without difficulty to the Wyndham Arms. They do some nice food - or at least they did a few months ago and I really can't imagine that things will have changed by then. I'll inform Flying Farmer of the proposed event as I know he doesn't live too far away so may also be able to join us. :ok:
A word to the wise for the PPRuNe Caravan Bashing Group - my tin tent will be in a very secure location so don't even THINK about getting up to no good, it won't work. :E

I could be interested but, if I was coming all the way from Norfolkshire, I would prefer a weekend. Would there be room for my ambulance sorry, luxury Mercedes motorcaravan?

Cheers

Whirls, I can give you the address and phone number of a very nice site only a few miles away. It's well run and the owners are very friendly and helpful. :ok:
Are you taking your luxury conveyance to the Gatbash? There's a good Caravan Club site reasonably nearby. :)

Radar66
27th Aug 2007, 00:03
noooooo not MORE caravans?!! :ugh:

;)

Seriously Whirls it would be great if you can make it also!! I too would prefer a weekend as am coming down from Londonium, but I understand that DXW is only there for a couple of days, so Monday the 8th??? it just seems a leeeetle bit harsh to have another sesh the night after the gat...

I'm hoping that i've managed to bagsy a bed chez W as I don't think that my geriatric parents would appreciate a return to my teenage years of either me stumbling around setting off the dogs and burgular alarms or having to come out in the dead of the night to collect me from some random dive! Also, they've recently moved to a long long way way - ooooooh all of 20 - 30 mins drive away from the Wyndham.... :\

Whirlygig
27th Aug 2007, 00:14
I can't make the GatBash this year but, if this comes off, can I contact you for details!

Radar - it is not a caravan - it is a luxury motorhome. It may look like an ambulance ......

Well now - - - as has become somewhat traditional for any Somerset bash, I am happy to provide either a pre-bash or post-bash drunkex/scoffex at my place.

This can be either Friday night or Sunday night, whichever is best for you guys and gals.

Just let me know which you would prefer and it shall be so (with the majority getting their way).

If you do plan to take up this offer, let me have an e-mail addy and I'll send you a map.

Radar66
31st Aug 2007, 18:08
At the moment I am flexible to either Friday night or Sunday...

BUT I would imagine that some people would need to get back to wherever on Sunday? So at present I'm going to go for the Friday night...

I'll try and get down to the area on the Thursday as won't be able to escape a Somerset visit without at least one night at the aged parents! and then mosey on over sometime on the Friday. If that doesn't work, workwise, I'll just have to come on over on the Saturday and leave Sunday.

Thanks DX but I've decided to drive down in the car and stay in a hotel close by.

It's a long way from Deepest, Darkest Dereham and, as the ambo is kept elsewhere and I have to pick it up first, the logistics were getting too complicated for my little brain!

However, I'm hoping for a guided tour of yours and maybe share some hints and tips!

Whirls you will be very welcome. When are you planning to arrive?
Radar - it's at Parret Works and is only a small site but it has an excellent Caravan Service Department. There are only about 24 pitches on the site (most, if not all have electric hook-up) and a very nice play area for children which has been, very sensibly, located at the far end of the site well away from the road and traffic entering or leaving the site.

Gonzo, Redsnail, and Standard Noise: really hope that some miracle happens and that you guys can pull it off to get a free evening/weekend?

Now, at present it looks as though there will be a few of us floating around aimlessly on the Saturday (no doubt in recovery mode from the previous night's shennigans... :\). Does anybody have any thoughts or ideas as to what they would like to do?

Burrow Hill (http://www.ciderbrandy.co.uk/) cider and cider brandy I think has been done before by some of you?

Me? I'll probably go for a walk along the levels, revisit some places that I haven't been to for a while (anybody got a dog i can borrow?!).

If there are any historians amongst you, Muchelney has a medieval abbey (http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.16230), a priest house (http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-priestshousemuchelney/) and a lovely church (http://www.johnleachpottery.co.uk/somerset-levels.asp) with topless angels painted on the ceiling (I know cos I used to live next to it!), and a chance to have a cuppa at the Almonry Barns next door. If anybody is interested in visiting the priest house let me know cos i'm hoping that the same peeps are living there as they were when my parents used to be their neighbour... and of course there is the infamous John Leach (http://www.johnleachpottery.co.uk/default.htm) pottery.

Golf? Long Sutton Golf Club (http://www.longsuttongolf.com/) is positioned between Long Sutton and Long Load.

There are also an assortment of various garden centres spotted around the area.

oh.... and I suppose that this (http://www.fleetairarm.com/) ought to get a mention....

any other thoughts, suggestions, ideas?

Whirls mentioned a hotel near the Wyndham Arms, could someone furnish me with the details and I'll be able to confirm my attendance (or not!) for the Saturday once I get back to work this Friday morning and see the October roster.

What about East Lambrook Gardens (http://www.eastlambrook.co.uk/pages/)? It's a calm, pleasant place and it's got somewhere to buy a soothing tea or coffee. :E
On a more practical note, I have a Zafira (7 seats) so will have spare seating capacity when travelling around. If anyone would like a lift from the Martock / Parrett Works area (and back) to The Wyndham Arms please let me know. On Saturday I'll probably have 5 spare seats as Wholi may want one (can't ask him at the moment as he is currently trying to drink Canada dry - or at least make a very sizeable hole in the single malt stocks.)

Canada Dry Tut, tut Whirly, I was very careful with my spelling it says "dry" not "Dry" putting Canada Dry into anything is likely to be construed as attempted murder by Wholi. I have just made a discovery - apparently the East Lambrook Manor Tea Room closes for the winter starting about two weeks before we get there. All is not lost however as there is a 17th century oasis a little further down the road. There are other places to visit too - Cheddar, Wells, Yeovilton for the Fleet Air Arm Museum etc. Of course you may just need to spend Saturday morning recovering from Friday evening and then the afternoon building up your strength for the festivities at The Wyndham Arms. :E

gcolyer - you're in! do read through - it's not very taxing and it will give you an idea of the set up, but it primarily boils down to a meet in the pub on the sat eve, but if you want to turn up earlier, do!

Well, looks like I'm on the firm for this one. Just need to book the hotel and pray I get away from my day shift early (normally a 1900 finish, but hopeful of an EG).

Very kind of you to offer Wholi, but I'm on day shift on Saturday and with a 1900 finish, I'll be cutting it fine as it is. I can only make Sat because it's my last day of six. I always miss the fun!:{

A whole night out with other Prooners and they were still talking to me in the morning. Result!
A very enjoyable evening which was saved (for me, anyway) by DX Wombat having space left in her chariot otherwise it might have been a dry old night.
Fantastic food (which it appears can only be found in country pubs these days!), great company and a few glasses of something or other made for a gentle introduction into 'bashing'. Funny though, it hadn't struck me that I may have spoken to some of you in a professional capacity before, but hey, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Whirls yer a lifesaver, if I hadn't found you at the hotel, I'd still be walking dazed and confused around the lanes of Ciderset.

Shame I missed the Friday, but work, it's the curse of the drinking classes.
Thank you all for great night out and for being gentle with me, I'm fragile soul really. I might just be persuaded to do it again some
day..............................................don't s'pose the dates are fixed for next year yet, are they?;)

Nice pics too Radar66, shame about that bloke with the white shirt and red eyes listing rather badly to Port.

I therefore can't do a report until that is back up as I only have "limited" access from work.

This is not good.

Woke up with the mother of all colds, can’t breathe, porridge brain, white spotty pastry face and a mouth that looked as though it had done nine rounds with Henry Cooper.

Therefore very difficult to do the British Stiff Upper Lip, but this is Radar. She will do it… she will.

She did.

Told work that Monday wasn’t going to happen, picked up the car, had a clothes crisis which Flying Farmer soothed her on via messenger (just wear the red satin high heeled shoes woman!), packed far too much but remembered bears, hats, balloons, streamers and banner, toffee and hats.

Drove down to Somerset, YESSSS! all the speed cameras are where she remembered them and got to 1 mile away from parents when received a phone call from a fellow bashee – pulled over and nattered for half an hour. Got to the parents ‘goodness darling you made awfully good time!’ (THANK god I didn’t arrive when I would’ve done otherwise would’ve had a bollocking – thanks you know who!)

Radar met Wholigan for lunch on Friday in Yeovil – nice café in a churchyard with views that suited Wholi down to the legs. Established that we were of similar humour and texted Flying Farmer that we were just off to get some protection…

Drove back to Wholi Mansions (really rather quickly) and DX Wombat turned up whilst Radar was demonstrating her kitchen knife techniques and the laughter continued. Then various other fellow bashees drifted in, Checkers, followed by Whirlygig… still daylight at this point and the booze levels were dropping rapidly. Somehow Wholi managed to produce the most incredible spread – truly delicious. Neighbours from Hell settled in nicely and then Wholi led Radar up the garden path. Then we were honoured with the presence of VitaminGee and his missus and the party started to really kick off! Whirlygig and Radar bolted upstairs to finally get changed and came down to find the Flying Farmer family who became instant bestesh friendshs theysh didsh! By this time Radar was sailing high on various cold drugs and booze and just remembered lots of noise and laughter. But then they started singing and playing guitars so she turned off her hearing aids and lip read whilst in a warm fuzzy happy world of her own with surround entertainment.

Slept really rather well and the bathroom roster was unnecessary this time Juud and FlyBlue! ;) After the breakfast to end ALL breakfast – pancakes with maple syrup AND bacon and eggs, we did a quick ring around to establish the movements of DX Wombat and organised that she would meet FF in the local inn whilst Wholi, Radar and Whirls donned stealth mode and performed the secret rites of the PPRuNe Caravan Bashing Group. Once caravan was duly adorned to their satisfaction, met FF and DX in the pub and escorted DX back to the caravan for the grand unveiling. All this, needless to say, was naturally accompanied by much laughter, wise cracking, giggling etc. Sadly Saturday was a complete no show for Checkers who found Friday night was his limit....

All bashees then dispersed back for much needed siestas before regrouping at the Rusty Axe where we met MadsDad and Standard Noise. Sadly there was a no show from Gonzo and GColyer? Pan Pan Splash had to play nurse back home so was unable to attend at the nth hour. All fellow dinees became good friends as the rugby scores were being transferred from table to table from the source of much frantic beeping and texting of mobile phones under the table. Wholi naturally took the most unsuitable pictures which necessitated the confiscation of his camera with Wholi frantically running around the table as his camera was being passed from dinee to dinee moderating the pictures to their satisfaction. His threats grew more and more scary until he said to Radar that he was going to grab her tits if she didn’t give him his camera back. Radar merely raised an eyebrow and lobbed the camera to Vitamin Gee. Somehow Vit Gee’s chest didn’t hold the same attraction for Wholi….. Radar received a text from TimmCat saying that he had DX caravan tyres and would release them upon payment of ransom (tooo late, we got there first!), plus various other PPRuNers had texts and phone calls from other members of the fraternity requiring updates throughout the weekend. Nothing to say really because we all behaved very well….. honest! We were all verrrrrry good…..

Back to the Wyndham Arms for a cheeky one where Wholi found a great pair of tights on a great pair of legs that woke him up for a little bit longer. But the poor fellow couldn’t take the pace so it was mutally agreed that it was finally bed time and a walk was arranged for the next day.

Sadly most attendees had to start the exodus back east so it was just Radar, Wholi and DX Wombat that made it to the top of Ham Hill for lunch and the Somerset WakeBash 2007 was deemed to be a success! Looking forwards to many more in the future.

(Such a shame that Wholi has now lost his internet connection – it wasn’t my fault!!!)

Named and shamed. Yes, sorry, I was so busy coping with a domestic emergency that by the time I had thought about letting anyone know, it was far too late.

Will definitely make the next one though, as long as I get enough warning so I can arrange my shifts.

Needless to say, I have a slightly different recollection of the weekend from that of Radar! I am also not going to repeat what has been said already, but will merely add a few points.

Apparently, Friday started off with Radar sending a text to Flying Farmer saying, “I’m meeting Wholi for lunch”.

FF responded (allegedly) with “feckin’ ‘ell gal, that’s a bit dangerous innit?”

We met as arranged and when the lunch venue was agreed, I did explain that the reason Jake’s was chosen for lunch was that the scenery walking past was frequently rather nice, so Radar should not have been too surprised by “nice café in a churchyard with views that suited Wholi down to the legs”.

After we had finished lunch, Radar sent another text to FF which said, “Survived the first hour”.

At this stage it was decided that a little wind-up of FF was in order, so – at the same time as the last text went from Radar - Wholi sent one saying “haven’t managed to shag her yet”.

FF’s response was “losing yer touch mate”, to which Radar replied, “no he isn’t”!

Enough of the wind-up for the moment – more later.

Radar and Wholi repair to Wholi mansions. (“Drove back to Wholi Mansions (really rather quickly)” – big wuss, we hardly touched the throttle!!!)

We had a small libation to set the scene. Then lots of sitting around and nattering and some (how can I say this publicly?) tea drinking took place.

DX Wombat arrived about now, having heard the kettle being put on.

With reference to Radar’s comment of “Wholi led Radar up the garden path” - it was only to show her me fruit trees your honour, honest guv.

When it was discovered that there was going to be a severe dearth of fags later that evening, the next stage of the wind-up of FF could start. Wholi sent a text to Flying Farmer saying, “could you please pick up some menthol fags for Radar?”. This was rapidly followed by a text from Radar saying, “and some condoms”.

The response was, “assume that’s the extra large ribbed lubricated ones”, to which the reply was “no just menthol will do”!!

Having set the tone for the weekend, we sat back to await the arrival of the mob. Shortly afterwards, the mob started to arrive as described by Radar 66 in her Bashrep, so I won’t go into that again, except to say that she neglected to mention bro-in-law, sis-in-law and niece being there.

Sadly, she also forgot what promised to be the highlight of the evening, until the problem was solved. There we were, sat chatting and drinking when there was this almighty clamouring and loud shouts of “let me out”. It transpired that a certain member of the party who shall remain nameless (but has a caravan) was the victim of a well-laid trap whereby the lock mechanism broke once she was in the lav. Amidst loud choruses of “oh dear what can the matter be”, and “call the feckin’ fire brigade”, the locks were taken off both outside and inside (by dint of passing the screwdrivers through the window). Alas, the door was still refusing to budge, and so the nameless Wombat was told to take the hinge pins out. Much banging and sucking of sore thumbs followed and the pins were out. Hmmmmmm – should just lift off eh? Nah – too easy. Major kick boxing training ensued until – finally – “I’m free” she cried and ran for the kettle. The above episode lasted for about 40 minutes!!

From then on, the downstairs loo was for men who could whistle loudly only, while the ladies all tried to break the lock on the upstairs bog door. Fortunately they failed.

While all this kerfuffle was happening, I was trying to get some food ready. Slaving over a hot stove has some advantages, as it means that you don’t get seriously stuck in to the drinking until a bit later, although the state of the head next day might gainsay that theory.

Suffice to say that we were up until stupid o’clock singing and bullshitting. Despite that, I still managed to get up to cook breakfast for Whirly and Radar. This was largely due to having a vast stock of head-bone-hurt-cure-pills in the kitchen cupboard.

The decoy worked and the Wombravan was suitably decorated.

Some other small amendments to Radar’s Bashrep:

“All bashees then dispersed back for much needed siestas before regrouping” - - except for the fact that Wholi received 3 phone calls during his attempted siesta.

Eating occurred:

“until he said to Radar that he was going to grab her tits if she didn’t give him his camera back” – no he didn’t ----- he shouted it so that all other diners (still in a good mood after the rugby result) stopped what they were doing and started to cheer him on!!! This is particularly relevant as several of these diners knew Radar (and her dad) from a previous existence.

“We were all verrrrrry good…..” well we most certainly were!!!

"a great pair of tights on a great pair of legs” – actually the tights were seriously cool, but the legs were just OK.

Awesome fun weekend and thanks for being there folks. Until next time.

Sorry for omitting your family.... but re the seige on the lavatory etc iI rather thought that it would be best to leave some stories coming from you! ;)

Mind you - can't wait to hear from DX Wombat about her version of the weekend - primarily the all of the above along with her side of the story regarding the onslaught of the PPRuNe Caravan Bashing Group!
