Camping is available, if you fly-in there is a landing fee of £10.00 of which £5.00 goes to the Air Ambulance. If you drive in its £5.00 and £2.00 for children. If flying in and needing fuel display an 'F' in the cockpit winow so marshallers can direct you to the pumps, if Camping please display a 'C' in the cockpit window so you can be directed for Camping Parking.

Should be a good event, you must try an Ostrich burger if you havn't already!

To be correct, the gliding site at Burn is 5 nm southeast of Sherburn..........which is nearer to the proposed entry point at Selby.
Could be exciting if its a bubbly day !

A friend of mine flew in to this event at the weekend with his children. As the icecream fridge in the marquee was full of beer he was directed by the lady there to the clubhouse.

He was stopped at the door and refused entry. He explained that he wanted to buy icecreams for his children. This didn't wash with the heavies on the door. Members only!!!

He pointed out that the marquee staff had sent him over, Members only!!!!!

He returned to the tent where the lady enquired why no icecreams.
She went to the clubhouse and got them for him.

Such crap treatment after a £10 landing fee beggers believe.
The people at the club must be right up their own backsides to treat a visiting pilot so badly especially in front of his children.

Well done to the lady in the marquee.
I doubt anyone from here will bother next time.

“A first class shot through the foot by SAC and the PFA.”

The regional rallies have been viewed by the PFA membership as a success. I have been to Wick, Hucknall, sywell and SHERBURN, but I take it from your post that you have not been to any? The Membership issue with SAC is an SAC issue and outside the local PFA struts control.

This is the first year the regional rally system has operated, so the struts have had a learning curve and some events have gone very well (Wick in particular), others have had growing pains. The LAA (the organization formally known as the PFA) is now reviewing the plan for next year, which will probably involve slightly fewer, slightly larger events with more head office presence, but this is under discussion.

Aren't you jumping the gun a bit with "The LAA (the organization formally known as the PFA)"?
The PFA AGM is on Saturday and has not yet voted on this proposed name change!

Further to the above, there was no apparent PFA presence at the fly in. Stand or similar.
It seems to have been just a fund raiser for the clubs involved using the PFA banner.
This makes the treatment of visitors even more inexcuseable.

The events were not organized by the PFA head office, but by the local struts. In the case of Hucknall and Sherburn the money made went to charity, so your “fund raiser for the clubs involved” is total nonsense. Most of the organizing and most of the people on the ground at most of the events were PFA members. The PFA is a member’s organization. The Members wanted a series of back to basics events, which the membership has organized on an entirely voluntary basis.

The problem with the above approach is that it has perhaps gone too far in the back to basics and we need more “presence” from head office at some events. The Membership response to the events has been good (with perhaps the exception of one event) and with the experience gained the struts will no an even better job next year.

In the days of Flying for Fun, the airfield was taken over by the PFA and this cost a lot of money. The regional events will always be run in collaboration with the airfield operators, so some things will be outside the local PFA struts control.

Fewer, larger, PFA head office attending events?

I know, how about one BIG, let's call it a 'Rally', where everyone can go and have fun. Just as long as they don't hire too many 4x4s and give them away to the pikeys and cost the membership £30k every year.....!

Given the piece about a director at SAC (see the other Sherburn thread) being allegedly found in possession of something more than a 99 Flake perhaps one can see why there may be heavies on the door of the clubhouse.

Drove 100 miles to attend the new style "local" PFA gathering, we had high expectations after the demise of the Kemble monster.
£10 for two to enter and park a long way from the flight-line despite having a large and heavy picnic basket.Pleas ignored.
Flight line guarded by at least 50 orange jacketed gestapo who would allow only occasional "guided tours of the aircraft park" - were is the old Sywell/Leicester/Cranfield spirit gone? can I not be trusted not to impale myself on a aeroplane? - my employer lends me a $40 million jet most days of the week. surely by my age I can be trusted to amble safely amongst light aeroplanes?
3 or 4 trade stands, nothing much to see and the flying all about 500mtrs away. We tried to visit the Sherburn Aero Club but were intercepted by yet another orange jacketed storm-trooper!
After less than an hour we left in disgust, drove south to Netherthorpe and sat in the grass near the r/w watching a Jodel do circuits in the sunshine and ate our picnic. much nicer. We won't be back - PFA ethos saw to that - a shame really.
Had it been a US EAA fly-in then things would have been very diferent, hosts, children given rides, membership tent, members BBQ, etc etc - wake up PFA before it is all to late.

This is a great shame.
As an ATCO I spoke to many aircraft en route to Sherburn and more than the majority took some pride in telling me that they were going to the last properly orgaised PFA ralley of the season.
I can only imagine their disappointment if what has been said is what actually happned.

From previous personal experience I know that Sherburn suffered as much as anywhere from club politics but that said, I've never encountered the tales of woe as described.

Whatever the real tale, you've got to remember that the really hard work on the ground was probably put in by a limited few working around a miriad of rules and regulations, over which they had no control.

Probably the same reason that the majority of airfields want nothing to do with sort of event.

All you had to do to get airside is show your PFA membership card. You are a member I assume? If not…

As I have said above, the PFA Membership wanted a back to basics event, and that is what happened. We got lots of PFA aircraft, and lots of PFA members wandering around aircraft having a good chat. The Membership appears very happy (see PFA web site (you have to be a Member to post). The Flying For Fun events were not aimed at PFA members alone and the association got fed up with subsidizing them.

I noticed in the event details that half of the landing fee were for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a very worthy cause.

Which charities received the rest of the money raised?

niknak

Eric,

bit of a cheap shot, anyone involved in organising this sort knows that there are always ancillary costs to pay for (insurance, staffing, electricity, maintenance etc).
Even if none of the money raised had gone to charity, I would wager that the organisers would have only marginally covered their costs, as is often the case.

please dont think all northern airfields are like sherburn
there is a welcome for all at the other nothern airfields breighton, bagby, santoft, beverley [if you have a float plane ] and countless others

sherburn seems to have lost its way lately but no doubt it will bounce back
it is one of the oldest aero clubs in the north and many changes have been made through the years some good some bad
