SU 30 MKI vs Typhoon

My mate (I'm not going to say his name, obviously :oh:) was telling me that the Eurofighter boys were seen off by the MKI during Ex Indra Dhanush at Waddington. :D

I cannot believe that the SU 30 is more agile than Typhoon, so what were they playing at? :ugh:

I can, that aircraft is very agile, doesn't mean though that it is a superior combat aircraft, it just happens to be very good at dogfighting.

There are more factors that come into account, though. Maybe the Typhoons were outnumbered. Maybe some political factor came into play. Maybe the SU had some support such as anti-air missiles some where.

But if it is as simple as you said (that Typhoons are no match for SUs), I don't think the British Government would of done the Italian-Spanish-German-British Typhoon contract in the first place.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I would guess that modern air to air combat almost never witnesses dog fights, due to middle and long range missiles... Don't the aircraft just shoot eachother from over 10 miles away and try to dodge each others missiles?

Clearly your 'friend' doesn't know much about the requirements for modern combat aircraft, the relative merits of the Typhoon and Su-30, nor said exercise Eric. Now please go away.

Beware drawing conclusions from sources such as 'a mate.' You need to know the exercise constraints, numbers, ROE, weather, weapons simulation, range from base and a host of other variables. Then there's always the 'one-off' situation, so over how many engagements did the Typhoon come second?
Trials are one thing. An exercise could be another. Just take your mate's comments with a pinch of salt.

I was at RIAT 2007 a few weeks ago and the IAF lads were hospitable and invited me into their enclosure. I spoke to them about all manner of things and they were somewhat surprised that I knew of their recent exercises with the RAF. They were nonetheless comfortable talking to me about it and in general stated that they enjoyed their time in the UK but the Typhoon vs SU-30 was an unofficial event. One of the pilots said that he had got one, whereas the other guy said that his encounter resulted in a stalemate.

They did comment that the Typhoon was an impressive aircraft and his acceleration made it extremely slippery and could change the 'balance' of the fight within a blink of an eye. Whilst talking to them about this they looked skywards at the Typhoon display and commented how it's still a very capable aircraft. However I won't mention what they said about the Tornado F3 :rolleyes:

I really don't think one can make that assumption, the Flanker would have been easier, faster and cheaper than the Eurofighter, and certainly is stronger than the Eurofighter in many ways (it certainly looks cooler) but the government buying them a realistic proposition? I think not. Although I believe they were offered them only half in jest a few years ago at Farnborough...

Aircraft are built and bought for political reasons usually, with combat worthiness often coming second.

Something I have not heard reported back on, is whether the R.A.F. hospitality was up to scratch. This may sound trivial to some, but was a concern to many in the UK, as the IAF put on such a good show for us.
I hope it went really well (the ground/entertainment side, where friendships are made. and real co-operation is forged).
If anyone cares to enlighten me, feel free to PM.

As for the Typhoon, all I can say is that I once saw it (when it was still the EFA running on RB199's) perform a stunning display at Filton. I had never seen an aircraft turn so tight, nor have I since then, including any Russian/Soviet type. I was completely impressed. It made any public demonstrations look tame.:ok:

Hospitality wise : - From all accounts the food supplied was rather good, with typical English dishes of rogan josh, and madras made by locals..

I have seen many types and actually purely from an impressive display point of view I think the MiG-29 with thrust vectoring has the Eurofighter beaten.
