I am due to start at FTE in Jerez in September and was wondering if travel insurance is essential or worth having? Do students normally take out extended trip cover or is it a waste of money?

I just spotted that endsleigh insurance does not include cover for dangerous sports which includes 'piloting an aircraft.' However I am already taking out medical cover with BALPA so does this really matter?

I really wouldn't bother.

Contact the school by phone or e-mail. They must deal with this issue on a day to day basis so will probably be able to advise you.

Check what Spain covers on the EHIC.

Look, here's the link: http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthadvicefortravellers/Gettingtreatmentaroundtheworld/EEAandSwitzerland/DH_4114793

Remember, this might not cover all the things you'd expect to get free of charge from the NHS in the UK. You may have to make a contribution to the cost of your care.

Remember that the EHIC won't cover you if getting medical treatment is the main purpose of your trip. You are advised to take out comprehensive private insurance for visits to all countries, regardless of whether you are covered by your EHIC.
And Spain itself: http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Policyandguidance/Healthadvicefortravellers/Gettingtreatmentaroundtheworld/EEAandSwitzerland/EEAandSwitzerlandbycountry/DH_4114717
