A debate with a mate in a pub:
Who has the better and more tolerable economy for a flight from SYD-LHR. I am saying QF, he is saying BA (Just the 747, not the 777).

What are your opinions?

Both have a seat pitch of 31 inches. Malaysian are probably your best bet, with a 34 inch seat pitch, and they're often cheaper, too. I would choose them over BA/Qantas every time.

The best airline is the one with unsold seats so you have a chance of an empty seat next to you. After that choose the one that lets you fly from somewhere other than London.

Ba and QF (both 31") are probably the worst, which usually surprises people who don't fly a lot.

Definitely check out Malaysian (34"), and some others (Thai etc..) (ranging from 32-34"). seatguru dot com should help. Three inches extra is worth it.

If you have some dosh, you might consider a premium economy seat available on some airlines like Virgin, ANA and BA. Booked well ahead, they can often work out to be not too expensive.

Watch out for the Virgin premium seats on the oz route though, as they are pretty comfortable, but most have seriously restricted legroom due to in flight entertainment boxes under the seats (which in my mind kind of defeats the point of premium economy!).

Singapore Airlines economy is better than Qantas/BA.
