Time for Holidays again....

320 mrs 320 320 junior and 320 junior MK2 will be going to DC in Sept..

My question is LHR-IAD with United
LHR-IAD with BA

or LHR-BWi with BA

BWI is better for my onward journey but with a 3 year old PTV's are important and from what i can find LHR-BALTIMORE is a 767 which does'nt appear to have PTV's. They are all similar prices...

as usual any tip offs would be appreciated.

Take a look at Maxjet ex STN.

I thought the BA 767s had been "Dusked" which meant they had the lie flat beds in Club, WTP and individual screens throughout the aircraft,

United operate 767 LHR - IAD, and have PTV's through out. 12 diferent channels and 6 childrens channels. Very good service too. Not sure about BA tho

Don't even consider Maxjet, they dont accept young children as they are a business airline only, and certainately NOT kitted out for kids. especially the food, as its all ala cart.

How on earth did the infant & kids get on my LAS flights then?

All BA767s not only have PTVs but are all kitted out with the AVOD system so even better to keep the kids mute for a few hours. Also BWI is a much smaller and easier airport to navigate then IAD and generally the BA plane is the only one arriving and departing from the international terminal at any one time meaning less congestion and easier to keep an eye on the kids!

I live in the DC area and, give the choice, I'd pick BWI over IAD any day. IAD may be a petty airport, but it is inefficient. Many millions have been spent on Bandaid fixes for the worst design errors.

IAD has only about 75% as many airline operations a day as BWI, but traffic is rather peaky and IAD is limited to one runway if the wind exceeds the crosswind limits on the N-S parallel runways. Substantial delays occur in that case.

At IAD you'd have to take the people-mover to the main terminal for customs / immigration. And then you'd use the people-mover back to the midfield terminal for your onward flight. If your onward flights were from BWI, it's a long, slow and probably expensive way to get there from IAD. IAD is a "slow" airport, especially on late-afternoon departures.

The international part of the terminal at BWI is rather new, though I haven't used it. If you are continuing on Southwest, be advised that they have a number of restaurants and shops after security in their new 24-gate part of the terminal. Both A or B security lead into the Southwest terminal, use whichever seems shorter.

thankyou all..
i'm staying in maryland for the two weeks as we have family there and have just booked the BA flights to BWI as they released a load of much cheaper fares.
The whole party 2 adults 1 child one infant £960 which i thaught was pretty good.
Nice idea re the max jet but at £2100 i think i'll slum it in world traveller
re assured about the PTV's that will defo keep him quiet for while!
just one question it will not let me book the seats for the outbound leg. I've done the inbound no problem but the outbound just returns a message saying it is not possible at this time try later...obviously a bassinet position is quite important so any ideas??
Is it possible they are waiting for an aircraft allocation?
now then..........car hire
thanks

320JI not sure if you asking for car hire info? If not, then ignore this!

I do not know Washington but work on the following principle: If I do not know the area and do not have anyone local = use a mainstream brand. If I have local people = ask them to book a local company that they know. They will probably not have an on-airport garage but they will be cheaper.

The mainstream car hire groups are expensive but you know what you are getting and can usually get good support if the car breaks down. Actually, they tend to specialise in having modern fleets that are reliable - that is what you pay for. So I just pocket the frequent flyer miles and enjoy the service.

On a recent trip to Cape Town (which I know well and have local contacts) I found that the local car hire companies charged a big premium for international credit cards and some wanted cash deposits ...:=

Now back to hairyplanes. :)

Smart move, avoiding IAD (I Am Disgusting -- the aiport, not me).
I've not done immigration/customs through BWI, but it has to be better than Dull-ass.

I often use A***o for car rental. They are cheaper than most other major brands. I've never had a dud car from them. They and N******l are co-owned and share the same cars in some locations. I've never used them at BWI since I live in the area. The major car rental companies at BWI are located in a new facility a considerable distance from the terminal. There is a shared shuttle from the terminal.

One might guess that your outbound is oversold. They are banking on cancellations or no-shows. Sorry to be in my wet-blanket mode.

I hope it's really a less-negative reason.
