ECOAIR TAKES OFF IN APRIL

ECOAIR, a West African sub-regional airline is to commence operation in April.

The airline which is to fill the vacuum created by the exit of Air Afrique is to commence operation with two Boeing 737-300s.

Details of the ownership is yet to be ascertained, but individuals and institutional investors behind the airline are expected to be revealed soon, as they are all expected to converge in Lagos for an investor forum.

The project coordinator however hinted that the investors are made up of private businessmen and other professionals in the sub-region with Nigerians dominating.

Well it appears to have a long way to go to begin operation, together with many hurdles to cross...two B737-300's in service in 8 weeks time, well we'll wait and see...

It would seem the investors believed that various national governments would provide the financing to set up an ECOWAS wide airline, which they declined. The project was heavily opposed at the last meetings of both Yamassoukro and Banjul Accord member states, particularly by Ghana whos' national carrier is already an 'Ecoair' in concept and function.

We can all ask government to fund our plans, however as this sort of state funding in Africa is firmly opposed by the World Bank it is not a realistic or even achievable request.

Nigerians love issuing Press Releases, dont believe all you hear...the reality is often quite different!
