I was just wondering the other day. You're given an arrival such as the Itnap 1A, Otala or whatever, but then ATC take you off the arrival before you get to Itnap( or whatever point). Many of these new arrivals, in Durbs as well, state 250kts by point X, which is not necessarily 40 miles JSAV(or 30miles DNV), so if you're not going to the point of the arrival any more, what speed restriction applies?

If the airspace is Class C then 250 below FL100

If you slow down, you can`t be wrong.

I would say you should slow down to be at 250kts, at the same DME as the original arrival you were cleared on. If on the ITNAP, call it 40 DME, on HEIDELBERG, call it 35 DME, and then still reduce to 210 by 20 DME.

There was an AIP SUPP out in july I think said if you're not on an arrival in RSA then it's 250 kts by 40DME and 210 by 15DME from primary beacon except CPT for the moment as the plate says 250 below FL200 inside 30DME regardless if yu're on an arrival or not.

Antman you are right about the speeds, but incorrect about Cape Town. That same supplement also says that the TMA sppeds apply to FACT.

I had to ask the ATCs there about it - but they showed it to me in the supplement. It is not uner FACT, but u will find it under FAJS !! (CAA editing).

SO even FACT has the same speeds as the rest of the country.

Another question about these arrivals. If one is given the Itnap 1A arrival and then at 40 miles cleared for the approach on runway 03R, when will you intercept the localiser, at 25 nm, or at 17 nm as the arrival states ?
My feeling will be at 17nm as the arrival states, but the ATC once queried our track because we remained on the arrival up until 17nm before turning right to intercept the localiser. So which is it ?

I'd say the intercept happens at 17 dme for llz gaurantee (sp?). If ATC want an earlier intercept they'd specify "03R .. intercept LLZ course"
