Expired Portugese ID

A friend of mine is Portugese and has been working in the UK now for a few years. His Portugese ID has expired and the only way he can renew it is to travel to Lisbon. He is not in possession of a passport. However he needs ID in order to travel by air to Lisbon.

Has anyone got any information which might help him to renew his Portugese ID?

He will be able to obtain an emergency travel passport from the Portuguese Embassy in London. This is a fairly standard service offered by most embassy and consular service offices.
